Great school. My son is learning better study habits and organization. Teachers are great and very approachable. Great communication. Good bunch of new friends on and off the field, Dexter is Great!

The food got continously worse to the point where for lunch, we would have salad. The teachers don't pay attention to homework, are childish, and don't undersand what they teach to the students.

Excellent academic environment in a culture that builds character

When we entered the Dexter Southfield community three years ago, we were immediately struck with what great fit it was for our son and daughter. Teachers at Dexter Southfield take the time to get to know our children as individuals and have helped them to discover and develop their strengths. From academics to athletics to music and art, we're been highly impressed with the caliber of the curriculum and the instruction, including the remarkable STEM program. What truly sets the school apart, however, is the focus on character development, or as the children say, "taking the hard right instead of the easy wrong." Students are challenged to consider tough questions about personal responsibility, empathy, and compassion for others. Over the last three years we have seen our children internalize these lessons, reinforced in countless ways during their school days. We're truly grateful for the difference the school has made for our children and our family.

We presently have a 5th grader at Dexter and a 7th grader at Southfield. I am thoroughly impressed with the school's curriculum, faculty, campus and commitment to a "classical" education. Participating in sports daily, learning Latin, being taught public speaking and learning to manage a rigorous in school and after school schedule is without equal. Shaking hands with a polite, well mannered, articulate, confident Dexter or Southfield student confirms the excellence of the education of the "whole" student at the school. Mr. Vincent is the consummate educator who believes in the school, the faculty, each and every student and the mission of the institution.

My son attended the high school. We were thrilled with the environment, the warm individual caring attention given to my son help him mature and grow into a confident and responsible young man. The expectations of honesty, ethical conduct and effort both in school and on the "field" help to supplement the values we hold as a family. From the Headmaster Mr. Vincent on down through the "ranks" this community cares about educating children. The academic standards were exceptional and I for one particularly like the proctored study halls. We were sad to leave Dexter !

We have visited and spent a great deal of time researching schools for our children. We have found Dexter Southfield to be the one school that gives our children everything we could hope and pray for. First and most importantly we found the school to be safe, inspirational, and very well organized with how they educate. How they value our children's overall experience while giving them the highest level of academics, athletics, drama, music, and so much more is what seperates them from the rest. The Headmaster and administration takes a VERY personal level of knowing every child and making them feel great about themselves. We are applying for all 3 of my kids and pray that we will soon become a part of the Dexter family. Love the family atmosphere!

I am currently going to Dexter, and I am in 6th grade. The school is mediocre because it has a great campus and facilities, but things such as the telescope that would be shown to you on the tour, is barely used, as I have been here 8 years and have only seen/used the telescope once. The ice rinks, gyms, and fields are great, but only one of them is used on the daily basis. This is a great school if you want to come here for sports, but for academics, it is not the best. The teachers are not as nice as you would think and the table manners that they teach you are pointless, such as eating a french fry with a fork and knife. Talking about lunch, the food is awful, and I am not a picky eater. If I had a choice of a different school, I would pick Milton Academy.

Dexter is an excellent school. We have two boys who attended Dexter, and they both credit the school for providing them with a solid foundation in academics and athletics. The Head of School, Todd Vincent is exceptional. He not only knows every student's name, but he takes the time to really get to know each student and actively supports their success. Dexter students are known for their command of English grammar, their polite manners, and their strong character and morals. Judging from some of the previous posts, perhaps some people do not value such attributes today. We do. Good manners, morals, writing skills and strong academics are timeless. Dexter has become even more attractive since integrating Southfield, particularly in the Upper School. Ask any boy iwho attends an all boy Middle School or High School. It gets old very fast. Boys need and want the presence, competition and opportunity to collaborate with young women in High school. We highly recommend Dexter-Southfield. The academics are very strong, class sizes are small, and it is a wonderful community with an excellent Head of School.

Parents need to look deep into this school before thinking about sending a child. The school in many areas is still antiquated and despite a new head of school (that was appointed by the old head of school without student or parent involvement or any outside search process) both schools fall well below real world expectations and programs at other private preparatory schools. You are better off spending your dollars on a school that has had an established high school (for more than 10 years) that prepares students for our society.

Without question the best private high school in New England. The academics and pursuit of excellence are unrivalled by other schools, new or old. Dexter Southfield truly cares about its students, and passionately fosters their intellectual and personal growth. Not only do the boys and girls receive the best education possible, but they are also very happy. The world class facilities are such that other schools frequently come to use them. The school s motto Our Best Today, Better Tomorrow can be seen in beautiful evolution as it crafts the leaders and scholars of tomorrow.

As a senior at the Dexter School who has attended since 6th Grade, I have a great understanding of the school. After changing headmasters, the school was successfully accredited through the NEAS&C. Dexter and it's sister school, Southfield, then went through a marketing renewal. Now known as Dexter Southfield, the school's mission is still the melding of classic college predatory courses and character development from PK through 12. I can tell you that I have truly enjoyed my time here. As I apply to college and prepare for the future, I look at the preparation I've had by attending Dexter and writing a college application is nothing. I strongly encourage you to think about Dexter Southfield. The school offers tremendous academics, amazing extracurricular activities, and brilliant athletics. I hope I have made some sort of impression on you. Thank You.

There are many different things to consider when thinking about applying to Dexter. Looking at the school from an outside perspective is immensely different than actually attending the school. On my tour of the school, the administration showcased some impressive facilities, such as the telescope. In reality, less than 10% of the students have access to the telescope. The school was originally founded in 1926, grades 9-12 were just recently integrated into the school. The few people holding positions of power in this school abide blindly to old outdated traditions. Some of these old traditions don't adequately prepare students for the modern day world, technology isn't integrated into Dexters curriculum. The year I have attended Dexter has been absolutely miserable. Dexter rarely breaks from its daily routine of 7 40 min classes. Rather than developing a comfortable environment for the students paying $40,000 of tuition a year, the school provides an unsettled environment. There is little to no freedom for students at Dexter, and many students grow tired of the controlling staff. I would not recommend to a average student looking for a modern day education.
