It is important to notice how pretty much all the bad reviews are from many years ago. Sure, the environment is competitive, but it is not to the extent that others make it out to be. The school offers a myriad of extracurricular activities. You have an interest, you will find it! Students always respect each other at all times, and the environment is very friendly. If you have a problems, your peers, or any adult, will be there to help you! It is NOT true that something terrible will happen to you if you don't get As. You will not get called our or anything. In fact, if you are struggling with your classes, teachers will always offer you their help. The school has a diverse environment, and no there is no racial discrimination happening. Neither is there one for socioeconomic status, despite the fact that the school IS very wealthy. But that is a good thing. The school helps out those students who do not have a fortunate economic status, so students will not miss out on anything despite differences. The school also takes pride in the fact that most of the administration is ran by teachers themselves. Overall, I would put away the old reviews and bring out the truly incredible place that Horace Mann is.

While this place is not for students with marginal academic interests or of mediocre grit and talent, the life of the mind, diversity, respect, and a healthful environment are at home in the Horace Mann School. Furthermore, the school is doing a great job at balancing individual achievement and good citizenship.

Fantastic education. Really made us think. Far superior to my college experience. You are very lucky, if you have the opportunity to attend.

Horace Mann is an amazing school for the right kind of kid. By the 'right kind of kid' I mean very bright. People post bad reviews when it's not the right school for them--perhaps their child was admitted in kindergarten and finds the school too rigorous. Horace Mann offers a truly unprecedented, incredible academic environment for highly intelligent, hard-working students.

My son attends High School. Academics are rigorous. Teachers are very knowledgeable, supportive and creative. Students are very friendly. Overall, excellent school.

From the outside, this school appears to have a healthy learning enviroment. I was looking forward to sending my son here, because of the individual attention, wide course selection, and "diverse" community the school supposedly has to offer. Unfortunately, the school isn't all it appears to be. Although the course offerings are rigorous as we expected, the school social environment is extremely rough, with pressure to be smart, macho, and athletic. The students are really judgmental about grades and socioeconomic status, and the "diverse" environment is even somewhat racist. The administration is in denial.

Be careful of sending your child here unless you really feel they will "fit in the box". Horace Mann does not want to work with families if their child does not conform to their high expectations, and in the early years sends tons of kids for therapy, psychologists, and services so they can get up to snuff. Children are pushed to be ahead academically and little focus on the social emotional well being of the children.

My son attends Middle School. It is true that this is a mini-college school. He s learning Mandarin, studying Latin, Honors Math...and lots of classes he selected. It is not an easy school at all and it is not all about the wonderful teachers but the students. We can visit all classes once a year and a good filter to feel you don t belong to it are the students. They are SO smart! If someone is complaining is just because they don t belong to HM... very few do. It s a place where being a nerd is cool so it s not a place for everyone. I feel very proud my kids excel at HM... parents are very involved with activities but don t interfere with their kids academics. If your kid needs a tutor to pass his classes this is not the school...just for the really smart & committed.
