I went to Platt CHOICE and I had the worst experience. The teachers were kind but the students were horrible. The principal and vice principal have no idea how to manage student or bullying situations properly. Students from Traditional Platt always make the CHOICE kid feel like they are less than them. I am now a freshman in high school and I was so lost, they did nothing to prepare us for high school homework-wise. I got sexually harassed by 2 students in my 7th-grade year and they did absolutely nothing other than tell me to avoid them. I was also majorly bullied both verbally and physically and once again, the school that I should think of as a safe place let me down. As a former student, I beg you not to send your child here.

We've had a great experience at Platt! We started here in January 2021 and have had only positive, constructive interactions with admin and teachers. My 7th grader has good stories about kid culture, and has neither experienced nor witnessed any bullying. The homework has been in the "just right" category for us, and the location is stunning right on Baseline Reservoir. The science classes do outdoor fieldtrips to the creek in nice weather, which is really awesome. The school did a great job with COVID rules and communication and I feel confident in sending my child there everyday.

The staff and administration at Platt are helpful and student-oriented. Plenty of classes and electives are offered. My children have had successful middle school experiences at Platt.

I went to Platt and am now a junior in high school. The teachers are OK but some of them are either just really crabby, which doesn't create a good learning environment for developing kids. Others run their classes very mechanically and by-the-book, with about the same level of enthusiasm as a worker at the DMV (which again, doesn't exactly foster an encouraging learning environment). Aside from that, some stuff went down but basically I ended up getting bullied by this guy and his group of friends. I should also mention I have depression/OCD/ADHD, the whole package. So the bullying really took a toll on my depression. I went to the counselors for help, and they basically said to just try and avoid them. One of them no longer works there, so that's good. But the other one (who admittedly wasn't as bad) is still there. The principal and vice principal ended up having to get involved when I hit a kid in the gut (he was bullying me and my depression had gotten it to the point where I couldn't take it anymore), and they focused solely on the fact that I hit a kid and not on the root cause. I ended up switching schools the next year. I don't know how much the culture and staff has improved since then, but if you're a parent with a kid on their way to middle school I strongly encourage you to look at some other reviews of Platt before making a decision. (Manhattan Middle School might seem too artsy and give the impression they don't focus on academics, but they're actually a good school with a great counseling department and accepting culture; I'm biased because I went there but you should consider them.)

Awful. My child’s school experience at Platt was traumatic and left many deep scars.

Pretty much horrible. Open enroll if this is your neighborhood school. Try Summit, Southern Hills, Manhattan. Unless you have a kid who can sail through and never need support from counseling or administration, steer clear. Great Music program, some good teachers, but at this age, bullying, drugs, peer conflict is huge, and without support it is a rough ride for the entire family.

They try to make it seem liken they are making it such a big deal to end bullying, but when put in a situation to actually deal with a bully, they rather make an announcement to the whole school instead of dealing with the bullying head on.

Teachers are great, my child likes them and enjoys the classes. BUT since harassment from other student started, school ( principal / counselors ) can't really help out. Very disappointed.

My son was a 6th grader this past year--fantastic experience! Teachers were dialed into his personality and academic strengths/weaknesses very early on. ILC kids are superIntegrated and the other students are friendly and supportive of them. Sufficiently challenging academically, but teachers/admin also focus on character development, etc. "Epic year" in the words of my son.

My 6th-grader headed off to middle school totally ready and excited for the next stage in his education. He enjoyed his teachers, classes, and extracurriculars, but when he was faced with a traumatic situation involving another student who was clearly troubled and potentially dangerous, he was completely let down by the administration. Platt seems to have a 'culture of bullying,' where it is much easier to 'blame the victim' and hope the victim just figures it out and goes away, no matter how much a parent tries to advocate or cooperate.

Platt has an excellent music program and the academics are solid. The culinary arts program is fantastic - the teacher is a trained chef and the kids have a ball with him. Most of the teachers are wonderful. The bullying, however, is pervasive and the administration shrugs it off to the point that it is dangerous. The administration is ambivalent and defensive about the situation, and seems incapable of curbing it in any way.

Platt has a wonderful music department with teachers who create an enjoyable and memorable experience for young musicians; the fall music fest is the highlight of the school year. Everything else about Platt Traditional is unremarkable. The counselors and teachers are uninspiring. My daughter is bored in many of her classes, but her teachers refuse to give her more challenging work. Also, there is a culture of bullying at Platt that the administration ignores. Platt has been a disappointment. My older daughter attended Southern Hills MS and it was a better overall experience.

Platt is the best kept secret in BVSD! My child is in 6th grade and absolutely LOVES it. We are in the traditional program, very challenging with plenty of room for advancement. The new math and reading teachers are great as are the original staff, very supportive. The kids are the most well-behaved kids I have ever known. The new principal and vice principal are second to none. They can even be seen playing on the playground with the kids. The counsel is terrific. Homework is not on the heavy side, so there is room for extracurricular activities. I would highly recommend Platt traditional.

My school is a great school! I am currently a 7th grader attending Platt. It is amazing in the science department where we got a new science courtyard just recently. The music department is amazing too. All the kids that tried out for All State Choir made it in and we've been to the CMEA's countless times. The math department is great. The teachers teach very well. The Language Arts teachers are the best. I am in Advanced Language Arts, where it is still going a bit slow for me, so my teacher is letting me choose an independent project topic for me to do and then present to the whole grade. Socials Studies is a little lacking, but it is still very interactive and I learn a lot each day. The gym is great. We do warm ups every day and then we get down to business where the teacher just leaves us alone to figure out what works for us. He does go over some basic skills for the unit though. The language department is wonderful. One of the teachers (mine), is on absence because she is having a baby, but her substitute is just as good as she was. The other teacher is from Guatemala and is a really good interactive and hands on teacher. Overall, Platt is a great school that offers a lot!
