- Submitted by parent on February 08, 2024I was honestly concerned about sending my kids here after reading that negative review from 2016z. However, Principal Mike Shembarger really turned this place around. He has over 30 years of experience from Berrien Springs Public Schools and it clearly shows. The academics, activities, facilities, and opportunities have greatly increased for the students. My kids are thriving here. Do yourself a favor and enroll your family.
- Submitted by parent on August 18, 2016We ended up pulling our youngest child from this school (after having children here for the last 15 years) in December 2015, and finished homeschooling the rest of the year. We did previously pull an older son in his 6th grade year because he was being picked on and I guess we should've learned our lesson then. Looking back, his teacher at that time, who is now the principle, would always tell us she never saw any signs of him being picked on. This year she proved her impotence in dealing with issues when it wasn't other kids but a newly hired teacher, who bullied and humiliated the kids in her class. She was hired as the middle school language arts teacher, but had never taught anything above 4th grade before. She made a practice of humiliating kids in front of the classroom when they asked for explanation on homework. She also in the first few weeks of school told the class that she could tell just by looking at the class that some would be successful and others not. Mind you, the entire 7th and 8th grade class consisted of about 14 kids total, so it isn't like these teachers are overtaxed with too many kids. She also managed to denigrate service in the military, when according to my son, she told the kids something like if they sat up straight and paid attention, they could end up being a teacher but if not they would end up in the Navy.The principle (Deb Wedde) did practically nothing to correct the situation and she and Doug Adams (the man who call himself the pastor there, but whom I refuse to use that title for since he lied to our family) started turning it around to try and make us the bad guys. In 2012 they had hired a middle school teacher who was a terrible math teacher and we ended up paying to send our son to Mathnasium this year to help him catch up with what he missed. Fortunately, they have since moved her to 3rd/4th grade. (yes, almost all the grades are doubled up with one teacher except Kindergarten).When our oldest son started there in 2000, the school roster consisted of almost 150 kids in grades K-8, now I'll bet they will be lucky to pull off 50 kids. We were not the only parents to pull kids out this year and it wasn't all due to the one teacher. We have since found out that the bully teacher is gone, but unless Deb Wedde and Doug Adams are gone, I would stay away from this school.
