If you're not familiar with progressive education, it might look a bit unstructured at first, but there's a real method to it. The structure supports each child uniquely, which becomes clear once you understand the philosophy behind it. The teachers are amazing, well educated, grounded and have developed personal relationships with us and our children. Seeing them become so self-directed and enthusiastic about their education has been incredibly reassuring, I'm so glad we followed friends advice and sent our kids here.

This school has developed a love of learning and a strong and confident voice in my daughter. She is self- directed, civic minded and very happy. The deep respect the teachers have for children is evident. The students are listened to, and their ideas are respected. This creates a rich learning environment.

After several years at a mainstream school with number grades on report cards, our child moved to Hiland Hall, and we got our first written report...we were bowled over by his teacher's insights into our young person. A magical place that engenders trust and respect for everyone. A great alternative to the mainstream system that inspires creativity, independence and responsibility.

This is an amazing school where the students seen as individuals and respect for others is of paramount importance. The teachers are quite brilliant, with a true understanding of progressive education. Children are allowed to grow following their own interests while still realizing their role as part of a community. Parents are actively involved and are encouraged to participate in all aspects of school life. Kids graduate as responsible, self-motivated, self-possessed people who are likely to go on and do great things.

There is an extraordinary atmosphere of community and respect for the unique nature of every child at Hiland Hall. This is found in the teachers who nurture it and the students themselves who are remarkably caring and respectful of one another. My child has learned to love learning and to listen to, and respect, her own intellect and creativity.

We thought the school was very strange. It bills itself as a progressive curriculum, but we saw no evidence that progressive educational philosophy was understood by the staff. The curriculum seems to be more dictatorial than anything else, with the teachers barking orders and requiring the students to adhere to a fairly rigid classroom schedule. The teachers seem distant and gruff, with one of them just out of college and very obviously without complete training as a teacher. The facility is filthy and shabby.
