This review is about Waseca's elementary classroom (see more detailed review on G---le). I waited a while to post this as I was conflicted. I really like Waseca’s philosophy and community. I spent about a month helping the lead teacher in the classroom (August 2023) when my child was in her classroom. I was shocked to see her tendency to quickly label some kids, including mine, and a number of other practices that are not consistent with the Montessori method, and as someone who is AMS (American Montessori Society) trained, I found it irresponsible on her part. The children weren’t given lessons in many areas. She insisted on a lot of worksheets work done, which is not a Montessori practice with young students. She’s all smiles until you voice your concerns. She said I was being disrespectful by sharing my concerns. She brought two students into the library to communicate with me that they were all upset when I asked them about something they did in the playground. One of the student’s mom, who’s the assistant head of school, sent a text to the lead teacher about it. The lead teacher told me to take my kid out of school, similar in sentiment of then new head of school. When I communicated what I noticed, the head of school was also upset and they insisted that I was the problem. The head of school emailed me many times that she wouldn’t allow our child in the classroom unless we attend a meeting, which was to inform us that we shouldn’t complain. There was a Waseca Board member, who was equally irresponsible. Afterwards, the head of school emailed us that we would need to sign a document that we wouldn’t complain if we wanted our child to be in the elementary classroom. The best thing I did that semester was to get my kid out of elementary classroom. He went from losing recess many times and being very bored in her classroom to being placed in the gifted program and becoming the Student of the Month in his new school.

Waseca seems to be a nice learning environment. The teachers and staff are very caring and loving, and there is a great community feel between parents, teachers, and students. An area of growth for Waseca is better communication with parents about classroom learning goals, and how individual students are progressing in relation to the classroom goals.
