Carlsbad is a resort city with an affluent reputation. The seaside city takes up about 7 miles of the coastline in the northern portion of San Diego County. With an estimated population of about 112,000 as of 2014, Carlsbad has a population density of nearly 2,700 per square mile. Generally, Carlsbad offers a racial spread of about 83% White, 1% Black, 1% Native American, 7% Asian and Pacific Islander, and 13% Latino.

As of 2011, Carlsbad included nearly 40,000 households. Of these households, nearly 68% were deemed families. Nearly 31% of households had residents under the age of 18. More than half of households included married couples, and about 14% had single parents. About 32% of households were deemed non-family.

Culture

Carlsbad is a seaside resort city, so it makes sense that the semi-arid Mediterranean climate is so alluring. Residents of the city experience sun on about 263 days of the year, and winter comes with only a few days of rain. Residents rarely experience frost along the shore, but you can expect some "June gloom" to hit during the summer months.

In recent years, job growth is positive. This indicates a trend that may lead to fewer unemployed residents. Unfortunately, cost of living remains high.

Outdoor recreation is common in Carlsbad, especially at Agua Hedionda Lagoon, where you can operate sailboats and motorboats in peace. Jet skis even have their own section for operation. The median household income in 2011 was nearly $86,000, which is higher than the median in many California cities. In families, the income tends to be much higher at about $102,000 annually. About 12% of households in Carlsbad make more than $200,000 each year, which is quite impressive. One interesting point of note is that the median income for men and women differs quite a bit. While the median for men is nearly $81,000 annually, the median for women is about $54,000.

In Carlsbad, about 8.4% of residents live below the poverty line. This includes 10% of the city's children and adolescents. With less than 4% of Carlsbad residents unemployed, this city's rate is much lower than the average for California. Employees tend to work in manufacturing, technical services, retail, and accommodation/food services.

The median price of homes in Carlsbad is about $652,000, but mobile homes can be found cheaper than $172,000. Renters are likely to pay about $1,700 monthly. Unfortunately, the cost of living in Carlsbad tends to be higher than for the rest of California.

More than 95% of Carlsbad residents have graduated with a high school degree, and more than half of the city's population has a bachelor's degree or higher. School scores tend to be much higher in Carlsbad than throughout the rest of the state and the country. Best Known For

It is likely that you have heard of Carlsbad before, it but it was probably in reference to the Legoland California Resort, which opened here in 1999. With the Lego Movie being a huge success, the theme park has experienced quite a resurgence in popularity.

Additionally, Carlsbad is the location of the country's biggest plant for water desalination.

If you go to Carlsbad, you should be aware that the city is home to quite a few popular steakhouses. These include Argyle Steakhouse, Tip Top Meats, and West Steak Seafood & Spirits. Spas and salons are also commonly frequented by locals. Plus, plenty of out-of-towners stop in to the Carlsbad Premium Outlets for some bargain hunting.

Did you know that Carlsbad is the first city with a modern skate park? Tony Hawk was born here too. If you like to skate, this city might be right up your alley. Of course,the seven miles of coastline doesn't hurt either. Don't forget about the stellar golfing either. It is an especially common sport among women.
