1. “I’m a pretty big Giants fan”
In South Jersey, you would be cursed for even uttering these words. Because of the area’s close proximity to Philadelphia, it’s all about the Philadelphia.
If you see someone wearing a Giants Jersey, chances are they’re from North Jersey.
2. “Hey, can I have some of that Taylor Ham?”
IT’S A PORK ROLL!!
Taylor Ham is a company that produces pork rolls. But not all pork rolls are Taylor Ham. Call it what it is, people. Again, are you from North Jersey??
3. “North? South? New Jersey’s All The Same.”
If you say these words, you are living under a rock (and you’re definitely not living in South Jersey).
South Jersey and North Jersey could easily be their own states.
4. “I’m not even scared of the Jersey Devil”
People in Jersey are tough… but no one’s that tough. Anyone who says this is lying.
South Jerseyans have a completely normal and justifiable fear of the Jersey Devil. Pretty much all South Jerseyans have either seen him lurking in the Pine Barrens, or have met someone who has seen him. Teachers even teach about him in school.
5. “Should We Split A Sub?”
In South Jersey, sub sandwiches are called hoagies. Maybe South Jerseyans did, in fact, steal this lingo from their Philadelphia neighbors, but who cares? It’s called Hoagiefest, not Subfest.
6. “Let’s go ‘down the shore’!”
In South Jersey, you just go to the beach. There’s no shore to “go down” to…because, and this should be self-explanatory, you’re already down here.
… That’s why it’s called South Jersey, right?
7.“I’m kind of the JWoww of my social group.”
South Jerseyans hate when people think they’re like the cast of the Jersey Shore, who they’ll vehemently tell you are all from either New York (mostly Staten Island) or, randomly enough, Rhode Island.
Those guys do not (I repeat – NOT!) represent Jersey.
8.“FIST PUMP! YES!”
Contrary to popular belief, South Jerseyans aren’t all fist pumping, hair gel wearing bros…Again, you might be thinking of Staten Island. Or you might be thinking about some “reality” show that might as well be fiction.
9. “I Heart NYC!”
Because most South Jerseyans affiliate most strongly with Philly, there’s definitely some resentment of all things New York, especially New York sports teams. Why root for the Giants when you could root for the Eagles?
10. “Who goes to the diner these days?”
You’ll never catch a South Jerseyan complaining about going to the diner. Going to the diner is a beloved past-time here. Who would turn down a delicious meal at reasonable prices that’s available to you 24/7? The answer is no one.
11.“JOISEY Is My Home!”
Excuse me while I gag a little.
No one actually calls it “Joisey.” If you pronounced it this way in South Jersey, you will get evil glares and an occasional middle finger.
12. “Atlantic City This Weekend?”
The only people who actually go to Atlantic City to gamble are the elderly and bachelorettes.
The rest of South Jersey avoids it like the plague (a plague you could easily contract on that crowded nasty boardwalk that’s been destroyed by tourists).
13. “Bon Jovi Sucks”
People in South Jersey have no time for Bon Jovi haters. He’s a musical genius. And a Jersey boy. So, if you don’t like him, get out.
14. “Wait, Seriously, Why Do They Call It The Garden State?”
North Jerseyans/New Yorkers don’t know why it’s called the Garden State, but a South Jerseyan will NEVER say this. South Jersey IS the reason Jersey is called the Garden State.
Any true South Jerseyan will brag about their cranberry bogs and their Jersey sweet corn all day long.
15. “I’m too old to go to Six Flags Great Adventure”
You’re NEVER too old to go to Six Flags Great Adventure. And don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise. The wisest and most mature South Jerseyans will attest to the fact that Superman changed their lives for the better.
16. “I’ll Get There Soon…”
South Jerseyans are pros at dealing with the worst traffic in the country (thanks to all of those tourists that love their beaches so much).
Hey, America, if your “Joisey” is the “armpit of America”, why do you cause accidents on their turnpike while on your way to overwhelm their beaches? Why?
17. “Do we NEED to go to Wawa?”
No one ever complains about going to Wawa in South Jersey. It’s not just a gas station, it’s a way of life.
You go to Wawa for literally anything and everything you need. Twizzlers at 2am? Wawa. Hoagie for lunch? Wawa. Morning coffee? Wawa. It’s the answer to everything.
18. “I’ve never seen The Sopranos…”
If you’re a South Jerseyan, you’ve seen the Sopranos. Or, at the very least, you went to watch them film the show in the Pine Barrens.
19. “Yep. Jersey IS The Armpit Of America.”
South Jersey has plenty of Jersey pride and little patience for people who don’t.
Anyone who calls Jersey “the armpit of America” is not thinking of South Jersey. Wake up, America. South Jerseyans are just down here minding their own business, and enjoying their delicious hoagies at the beach.
