Many of the parade goers tend to travel by subway to the event. The subway has a stop on the local track at 72nd Street which leaves you 13 feet away from parade paradise. Many of the people who drove in from surrounding areas had to park up to twenty blocks away and walk back to an ideal vantage point at 70th street. The subway appears to be the most advantageous means to reach the parade route as it is extremely convenient and inexpensive.
The parade goers perched against the metal barricades at 70th street just a few blocks downtown from the parade starting line formed a bond on the ground. The beautiful detailed architecture of the surrounding residential apartment buildings looked serene in the darkness -- and it was a chilly 39 degrees at 5:20 a.m. as the spectators marked their territory on the parade route. Central Park West is a neighborhood that has grown accustomed to the crowds of the Thanksgiving Day Parade. All shades were drawn as the crowds assembled. Many parade goers brought along blankets, chairs and snacks to help pass the time in as much comfort as can be gathered in the cold temperatures. The enthusiasm warmed every heart and helped others brave the elements.
As the crowds gathered, an air of expectation filled the air. It was finally nearing show-time. The clowns began to circle around, throwing confetti, carrying balloons and spreading cheer as the very first floats and fantastic, humongous balloon characters were seen. People began folding their chairs making way for the growing throngs of spectators. The feeling in the air was one of family. Little ones were ushered to the front of the crowd so that they could get the best view. Toddlers shared smiles and offered songs and cheer as the first floats begin to make their way down the parade route.
And What a Show it Was!
Children cheered with delight as the balloon of Thomas the Train made its way down the parade route. Another crowd pleasing balloon was the Mighty Power Rangers. With over 25 brightly colored and fantastical balloons, the oohhs and ahhs melded well with the marching band sounds. You were sure to see one of your favorites at the event!
