Parks and Recreation

Munford has an extensive park system, especially for a small city, complete with walking and jogging tracks, organized youth sports, playgrounds, tennis courts, skateboarding, and roller skating. There are also award-winning fitness classes, a great seniors program, and picnic areas. The City of Munford has purchased over 150 acres for recreation and relaxation. Valentine Regional Park

Located at 1020 Beaver Rd, Valentine offers a nature trail, two playgrounds, a BMX track, Stocked Lake, a picnic pavilion, soccer fields, and and two 18-hole disc golf courses.

Poplar Park

This popular park at Douglas and College Street has a football field, concessions stand, covered picnic areas, two tennis courts, a gazebo, playground, skate park, and open practice area.

City Park

At 101 College Street, you’ll find City Park, with a gazebo, walking track, open space, and a playground.

Centennial Park

Beautiful Centennial Park is located at the corner of Dacus and Reeder. The city opened the park in 2006 in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Munford. This park has five ball fields, plus a press box and concessions stand. There is also a playground and a walking track, with convenient parking nearby.

In addition to these parks, Munford has a city-wide walking track with entrances throughout the town. And the Munford Parks and Recreation Center has an indoor skating rink for kids ages 5-15. They offer public skating, late skate, and private rentals for parties. 

If you’re looking for more fun in the sun, there are many things to see and do in and around Munford. The Mississippi River borders Tipton County on the west, and the Hatchie River forms the northern border. The Hatchie is the only natural scenic river in West Tennessee, and it’s a great spot for canoeing.

About six and a half miles west of Munford is Glenn Springs Lake, which spans around 310 acres. This is a great spot for fishing, and the lake plays host each year to the annual children’s fishing derby, which brings 200 kids to the lake.

The Dacus Riding Club offers horse riding events, including Poles, Barrels, and Walking/Saddle Horse, as well as horseback riding for pleasure. In 2004, the club moved to a location with 20 acres in Brighton, and membership has been steadily growing since then.

A little further out is the Memphis International Raceway, a multi-track complex that has hosted over 100 National Drag Racing events and 12 years of NASCAR events.

The third Saturday in September, Munford residents gather downtown for the annual Celebrate Munford event. This family-friendly gathering includes arts and crafts booths, food, live entertainment, children’s games, and more. The city also hosts a Celebrate Independence event as well as a Celebrate Christmas event.

Schools

Munford Elementary School, Munford Middle School, and Munford High School are some of the best schools in Tipton County. Munford schools have nationally-ranked music and FFA (Future Farmers of America) programs.

Just for a sampling, the elementary school offers a band program, and all third grade students learn to play the recorder. There is a LEGO robotics club geared toward the First LEGO League Regional Tournament, a lunchtime reading program, a Minds in Motion class brought to the school by the Richmond Ballet, a Spanish program for grades K-5, and more. 

Jobs

As in most suburbs, the focus in Munford is on living, not working. The most common industries in town are retail trade, manufacturing, and construction. Many residents commute to Memphis for their work, with the average commute time just under thirty minutes. For many residents, living in Munford provides them with a nice separation between work life and home life.

25 miles south, Memphis is a city of opportunity. It's one of the largest shipping hubs in the Mid-South, and home to the second largest cargo airport and busiest domestic airport in the world. Memphis’ rail center is the third largest in the world, behind Chicago and St. Louis. The city boasts three Fortune 500 companies, which have brought a large manufacturing industry to the city.

Recent Headlines

The name Munford may sound familiar, because it has been in the papers recently. Naifeh’s Food Mart sold a winning Powerball ticket to Munford residents John and Lisa Robinson. The couple shared the record jackpot of $1.58 billion with winners in California and Florida. They ended up taking the lump sum for their share -- a little over $327 million. Munford also got another brush of fame when the Munford High School performed in the 2015 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City.
