In 1990 Atoka TN was a small town of 659 people, located a half hour’s drive from Memphis. In 2015, the population had swelled to 8,935, nearly 14 times as large. Much of the growth has been in young families, the median age being only 35.9, compared to the Tennessee median of 38.5. The city's rapid growth and the influx of young families with children has resulted in the majority of homes being new construction, and having three or four bedrooms, as couples plan their future family size.
The city's youth movement has had a noticeable impact on the lifestyle, as well. While the city is committed to maintaining its lifestyle as a quiet, rural, place best known for its family friendliness, the changes in emphasis on fitness, health, and quality of life evident. City amenities and entertainment are available in Memphis -- Atoka's focus is on these things.
Like most Memphis suburbs, Atoka residents take full advantage of the mild climate, and spend more time outdoors than in any other part of the country. The four large parks in Atoka (a total of 111 acres) feature walking and jogging trails, nature walks, athletic fields, covered pavilions, and a host of playground and exercise equipment. All but one are lighted, extending the time available for residents to pursue fitness and family-oriented activities.
To add to the fitness possibilities, the city was awarded a $400,000 grant in 2013 for construction of the Atoka Greenway Trail, a three-fourths mile paved pedestrian and bicycle path. This trail connects the 6.5 acre Pioneer Park, which has paved access to the downtown area, to the 60 acre Walker Park and its splash pad, lighted soccer and football fields, and the only sand volleyball court in the region.
In keeping with a small city which takes maximum advantage of outdoors and fitness, Atoka residents actively monitor and track individual and community progress in measures taken to prevent four major health risks. The percentage of residents with health insurance is at an all-time high of 82%, smokers now make up only 25% of the populace, 65% maintain a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI) of less than 30, and over 65% of adults report that they regularly engage in leisure-time physical activity. Not only are the numbers impressive, but the community resolve to track and publish them says a lot about the city's attitude toward healthy living.
There are no major industries in Atoka, but the town is a short 34 minute commute from the city of Memphis, less than 10 minutes longer than the national average. Four occupations account for almost two-thirds of all jobs held by residents. Many commute either to the city, or to occupations in other areas of Tipton County.

Unemployment is a consideration for Atoka residents, the rate staying approximately 2% higher than the national average. However, as the town continues to grow (173% since 2000), the numbers of jobs have increased, and the rate of unemployment has decreased accordingly.
Atoka residents enjoy family activities year-round. The annual BBQ-Fest in April features professional, local, church and community team competition, as well as a Kid's Kook-Off at one of the city parks. Movie Night at the Park was begun in 2015, and was such a hit that it will be expanded during warm weather (which is most of the year). Also having become an annual event, Rock the Park is a days-long celebration of independence, sponsored by the city and several local churches. Community Safe Night Out at Halloween, a Christmas Decorating competition, and Santa at the Park are other annual family events.
All of these events are in addition to local sports leagues, community cookouts, and neighborhood events. The family is the center of focus in Atoka, and residents have pledges to keep it that way.
To that end, Atoka is one of the safest communities in America. Crimes are typically divided into two categories, violent crimes and property crimes. The overall crime rate in Atoka is less than one-third the Tennessee average; and is only 40% of the national average. Violent crimes are one-fourth (74% lower) the Tennessee average, and less than half (57% lower) of the national average. Atoka’s property crime rate is 67% lower than the state, and 61% lower than the national averages. Property owners in Atoka can feel safe at night, and their children can play without fear.
Atoka still maintains a small, sleepy town atmosphere and attitude. Focus is on family, faith, and community. For those seeking entertainment and night life, the drive into Memphis is necessary. As one of the largest cities in the nation, and the largest in Tennessee, Memphis is known for blues, rock-n-roll, and barbeque. Atoka residents can shop, dine, and socialize at any number of venues in the city.
Memphis is not all about bars and food, either. Many cultural sites, events, and activities are available, as there is no shortage of city amenities. In many ways, Atoka residents can and do have the best of both worlds, a quiet home town and life, and a nearby city with all the amenities and opportunities you could wish for
