Just because it's a stereotype doesn't mean it's not true. The Red Sox are a lifeblood of the North Shore, and a certain night in October 2004 may have been the best night of many locals' lives.
3. You Can Have Starbucks, Anyway. North Shore Locals Will Take Dunkies.
Starbucks is no match for local favorite Dunkin Donuts on the North Shore. There's so many, you probably won't go anywhere without passing at least a couple. And the regular order is a large iced coffee, even if it's snowing outside.
4. Locals Have A Revere Accent, Thank You Very Much
Don't call a Revere accent a Boston accent, because it has its own little local charm. Plus, the accent helps locals pronounce North Shore town names like Gloucester, Haverhill, Wenham, and Peabody—hint, the last doesn't sound like "body."
5. No Thanks, McDonald's, The North Shore Has Kelly's
A take-out roast beef place might sound strange to out-of-towners, but the North Shore knows that Kelly's Roast Beef is a local favorite. But you're better off the with Revere Beach location than the one on Route 1.
6. Rumor Has It, Salem Willows Has The Best Popcorn In The World
So we haven't tried every bag of popcorn in the world, but it's safe to say that the hot, buttery goodness at the Salem Willows arcade and amusement park would certainly be in the running.
7. Come Fall, Locals Live And Breathe By The Pats
Patriots Football reigns supreme on the North Shore, with locals braving sub-zero temperatures to cheer their brains out for their beloved Tom Brady and his team take home yet another conference championship.
8. Does Your Beach Sing To You? Manchester-by-the-Sea Does.
The famous singing beach in Manchester-by-the-Sea is a local landmark on the North Shore. Stomp around in the dry sand and you'll hear musical notes.
9. But That's Just One Of Many Gorgeous Beaches
For summer days when you aren't feeling musically inclined, there are plenty of stunning Atlantic beaches to get a tan, including the famous Revere Beach, Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester, Crane Beach in Ipswich, and too many more to count.
10. Locals Are Winter Tough
Snow or frigid temperatures got you down? Not on the North Shore, where the locals are winter pros. Because of the unpredictable weather, many natives keep ice scrapers in their car year round.
11. If It Has Ice Cream, It's Called A Frappe
North Shore natives know that those frosty treats for hot summer days are called frappes, and there's no accent on the last e, Starbucks. And yes, they are delicious.
12. Salem Is Truly Bewitching
Everyone learned about the Salem Witch Trials in history class, but locals really commit to its memory with Wiccan shops, the Witch House, and several witchy museums, including the Witch Dungeon Museum. Needless to say, Salem is the ultimate place to be on Halloween each year.
13. North Shore Is Home To A Ridiculous Amount Of Delicious, Fresh Seafood
Fresh from the Atlantic Ocean, the North Shore is home to some of the best seafood in the country. Fried wholebelly clams were born at Woodman's of Essex generations ago, and the local joint still serves up unparalleled fried deliciousness.
14. Wash It All Down With The Best Local Brews
North Shore locals take pride in their down-home craft beer and cider selection, including some great ones like Far From the Tree Cider from Salem, Newburyport Brewing Company, Cape Ann Brewing Company in Gloucester, Ipswich Ale Brewery, Riverwalk Brewing Company in Newburyport, and the Tap Brewing Company in Haverill.
15. Locals Take The T Everywhere
The local commuter rail, subway, and trolley, the MBTA, is always just called the T. Going to the Garden for a Bruins game? Headed to Fenway for the Sox? Downtown for dinner? You're probably taking the T.
16. North Shore Is The Birthplace Of The U.S. Navy and Coast Guard
Though there is some dispute as to where exactly it was formed, Beverly or Marblehead, the American Navy began in the North Shore. There's no disputing, however, that the U.S. Coast Guard began in Beverly.
17. Salem Is Home To An American Classic
You probably never escaped high school without knowing about the famous House of the Seven Gables from Nathaniel Hawthorne's Gothic story. The house, now used for classic American weddings, still stands in Salem.
18. Mark Wahlberg And George Clooney Know How Awesome Gloucester Is
“The Perfect Storm,” the 1997 based-on-a-true story book by Sebastian Junger was set in the fishing town of Gloucester, with Marky Mark and Clooney taking on the roles in its film adaptation.
19. The North Shore's Literary Cred Is World-Known
But it doesn't stop at Hawthorne and Junger; author icon John Updike called Beverly his home until his death, and the region is highlighted in the works of H.P. Lovecraft, and poets T.S. Eliot and Robert Lowell.
20. Locals Can Indulge In A Taste Of Italy
Because of some locals' strong Italian heritage, the North Shore is a mecca for outstanding Italian restaurants. You can't go wrong with red wine and homemade pasta from Salem's 62 Restaurant and Wine Bar—and don't worry, the pasta dishes are half size so you can try them all.
21. But The Upscale American Food Is Legendary, Literally
Named for American legend Paul Bunyan's beloved Babe, Lynn's The Blue Ox restaurant perfects upscale comfort dining. Must be in the North Shore’s blood because the owner and chef is from Swampscott.
22. Toothbrush, Candy, Makeup, Beach Chair? Get Them At CVS.
North Shore locals know that there's a CVS Pharmacy within five minutes no matter where they are, and they can get anything they want or need in one stop in their favorite convenience store.
23. There's A Little Bit Of Hollywood On The North Shore
Dennis Lehane's creepy novel “Shutter Island” was set on a fictional island in Boston Harbor, but Martin Scorsese, towing along A-listers Leonardo Dicaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, and Michelle Williams, shot much of it on location on the North Shore
24. Ipswich Is Royally Beautiful
When you visit Castle Hill in Ipswich, you won't know where to feast your eyes, the stunning Crane Estate, with the saltwater pool complete with guest cabanas, statues, and rose garden, or the killer views. And that is not a bad problem to have.
25. One Chinese Food Restaurant Is An A-List Hotspot
For decades now, when in Saugus, anyone who is anyone in sports, music, and on the big screen has stopped by Kowloon. It has played host to massive names that run the gamut like The Temptations to Anne Hathaway to Mike Tyson to the late James Gandolfini, as well as local celebs like Jordan Knight. And oh yeah, the food is delicious, too.
26. The North Shore Is A True Fishing Community
The Swampscott Fish House is the oldest active fishing supply storage house in the whole country, but locals know that now it's home to the Swampscott Yacht Club where local sailors and fishermen can grab a drink at the refinished bar.
27. You Can Dine With The Best Views In New England
Just try to find better panoramic ocean views than private dining atop a lighthouse. Yes, the lighthouse dining club sponsored by the Lighthouse Preservation Society means you can reserve an incredible spot atop Newburyport Harbor's Rear Range Light. No surprise that it's where hundreds of people propose to their sweethearts.
28. You Can't Go Anywhere Without Bumping Into A Great Farmers Market
You couldn't avoid a farmers market on the North Shore even if you tried—and why would you when they're this great? Nearly every North Shore town has a local favorite market.
29. The North Shore Has A Bucket Load Of Inspiration For Artists
Three dozen artists populate the Rocky Neck Art Colony in Gloucester, and who could blame them? It's hard not to find inspiration for beauty in a town like Gloucester.
30. The Port Towns Are Nothing Short of Picturesque
Rockport and Newburyport on the North Shore both attract people for their quaint boardwalks and main roads, chock-full of great boutiques and restaurants, both tied strongly into their fishing heritage.
