1. Greensboro Gives The Phrase “College Town” New Meaning
Greensboro’s not messing around when it comes to higher education: there’s Bennett College, Elon University School of Law, Greensboro College, Guilford College, North Carolina Ag and Tech State U., University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and Guilford Technical Community College.
In total, there are 45,000 college students in Greensboro, making up a majority of the population. Yeah—that’s a lot of beer pong and frat parties, my friend.
2. A Hot Dog From Yum Yum Can Turn Any Bad Day Around
If there’s anything a true Greensboroite knows, it’s that a hot dog from Yum Yum is by far the greatest. This is a world famous hot dog, people. There’s no problem that a Yum Yum’s hot dog and a Cheerwine can’t fix. Oh, and the ice cream isn’t half bad either.
3. Everyone In Greensboro Has A Soft Spot For The Grasshoppers
Heading to a Greensboro Grasshoppers game at New Horizon Park (or New Bridge as it’s now called) is a staple of a Greensboro summer.
The Grasshoppers are a minor league team (farm team of the Miami Marlins) and are a ton of fun to root for—seeing as Greensboroites are extremely proud of any and all things Greensboro.
Who doesn’t love watching Guilford the Grasshopper dance around while eating some peanuts, and enjoying a good old fashioned American ball game?
4. Visiting Wet N’ Wild Water Is The Best Thing About Summer In Greensboro
A Greensboro childhood summer is incomplete without at least three trips to Wet N’ Wild Water Park, the largest water park in all of the Carolinas.
This is where all the magic happens, it’s like a North Carolinian Disney World—but underwater.
And, hey, the park’s clearly not just for childhood. Sure, you might lazy river when you’re 5. But you Bonzai pipeline when you’re 15, Daredevil drop when you’re 21, and head back to the lazy river when you’re 30—that’s the circle of life, Greensboro-style.
5. Everyone Knows Someone Who’s Related To An Historical Figure
If there’s one thing to know about Greensboro, it’s that this is an historical city. Known most notably for the Greensboro Sit-Ins, one of the major launching points for the Civil Rights Movement, this city is loud and proud about their history of resistance.
Greensboro is also home to one of the first routes of the Underground Railroad, which began in a cave near a creek on what is now the Guilford College campus. Because of the area’s rich history, you’ll be hard-pressed to find someone who isn’t related to and/or knows someone related to a famous historical figure.
You’ll hear sentences like, “Oh yeah my great Aunt’s cousin’s friend lives in a building that was used in the underground railroad” all of the time. That’s Greensboro for ya!
6. You Know What A “Tournie” Is And You’ve Been To Hundreds
Greensboro isn’t nicknamed “tournament town” for nothing. This city is home to a ton of famous sporting tournaments, such as the PGA Tournament, the Figure Skating tournament, and the ACC Basketball Tournament. In Greensboro, it’s always tournie time.
7. The Food Truck Movement Is Real And It’s Rolling Over Greensboro
Greensboro is relatively new to the “Food Truck Scene”—but oh, have the food trucks been making a scene! The “Let’s Roll Food Trucks Into Downtown Greensboro” movement (yes, it’s an actual movement) has organized “Food Rodeos” where all the best food truck vendors in the state gather together the fourth Sunday of every month in Greensboro for some full on food truck wars, letting the lucky people of Greensboro decide what’s what when it comes to the best food off of a food truck.
You mean to tell me that in Greensboro the best food in the state comes to you? Um, yes, yes it does.
8. Everyone You Know Either Owns A Jet Ski Or A Golf Cart
Greensboro is an outdoorsy kind of place, but no two things say Greensboro more than watersports or golf.
If you’re from Greensboro, you own a jet ski or you own a golf cart. And one of those two things will be taking up all of your free time on the weekends.
Whether you’re hitting up Lake Norman for some jetskiing or heading to any one of Greensboro’s seemingly endless amounts of golf courses, you’ll definitely be living the Greensboro way of life.
9. There’s Nothing Sweeter Than Fresh Peaches At The Greensboro Farmer’s Curb Market
Greensboro isn’t called “Greensboro” for nothin’ quite a few Greensboroites have the green thumb. And the city is known for its delicious farmers markets and fresh produce.
Believe me, once you sink your teeth into a delicious, fresh peach from Greensboro Farmer’s Curb Market, you will never again doubt that the freshest fruit can be found in right here.
10. You Folks Know That Youngin’ Who Lives Over Yonder? Bless His Heart
In Greensboro, you don’t say “people” you say, “folks”. A “youngin’” is someone who should never even dream of commenting on what grown folks are doing. And you don’t live over there, you live over yonder.
Oh, and how could I forget? Bless the hearts of everyone. Everyone’s heart must be blessed at least twice a day. If you’ve done something amazing, bless your heart. If you’ve done something cruel and unusual, bless your heart. Greensboroites dont discriminate, they bless everyone's hearts.
