Throgs Neck got its name from one of America's original settlers in the 1600's, John Throckmorton. An area almost inaccessible to tourists, Throgs Neck has a local community that is unlike any other. However, this area has also become well-known for its battle over the spelling of its name. Once spelled with 2 g's universally, it is said the confusion arose in 1955 when Robert Moses, the man credited with helping to build and develop many areas of the region, changed it to 1 g so it would fit better on signs. Many residents reject the newer spelling.

A tight-knit community in which everyone seems to know everyone by first name, Throgs Neck is an excellent location for families and friendly singles. In addition to that, given that the area is so close to the water, boating and other water sports are prevalent here during the spring and summer months. Moreover, community events and block parties are a regular occurrence especially during the holidays and warmer months. Given that the number of recreational venues is limited, events such as parades are used to create a celebratory atmosphere all year round. Furthermore, the area began a tradition known as the St. Theresa Feast. This annual event has taken place every summer for nearly 20 years and rivals the world-renowned San Gennaro Italian feast in Manhattan's Little Italy.
