Lynn, MA occupies a corner of Nahant Bay just ten miles north of downtown Boston. With a population of just over 91,000 in 2013, Lynn is the largest city in Essex county. It's the perfect size to offer something for everyone, from young professionals to retirees. The median home price in the city is currently $259,900, significantly lower than that of most Boston suburbs including the neighboring towns of Saugus and Peabody. Cozy neighborhoods and affordable housing make Lynn a popular choice for those looking for a less expensive Boston suburb with proximity to the city itself and to the beach.
Lynn is known as one of the oldest industrial centers of Massachusetts. The city was originally settled in 1629 and was incorporated a few years later as part of Saugus. In the 1600s, a tannery and shoe making factory formed the heart of its industry and operations; Continental Army soldiers wore boots manufactured in Lynn during the Revolutionary War. Later, Lynn became home to one of the first two General Electric plants. During WWII, one of those plants spawned a jet engine factory that also specialized in electric systems and components of the aircraft used during the war.
Today, General Electric Aviation remains one of the largest area employers. It's also known as the city of first, claiming the first American jet engine, the first electric trolley in Massachusetts, the first roast beef sandwich, the first American tannery, and the first American dance academy, among other distinctions.
Lynn neighborhoods are lined with classic colonials, mostly smaller homes built in the late 1800s and early 1900s when industrial growth spurred rapid population expansion. You'll also find 1920s and 30s bungalows and Cape Cod style homes near the beach. More desirable (and more expensive) properties tend to be sprinkled in the area surrounding Lynn Woods Reservation, a green space that takes up a quarter of the city's land. Locals also consider the beachfront area a desirable place to live, while the neighborhoods bordering Saugus are known as being somewhat less safe.
Although the majority of the residences in Lynn are single family homes, there are some condominiums as well, particularly along the beachfront. You'll find homes at a wide variety of price points, the vast majority under $500,000.
Plenty of family-friendly activities make Lynn a great destination for kids and adults of all ages. Lynn Woods is one of the most popular stops during the warmer months thanks to over 30 miles of hiking and biking trails. During the winter, cross country skiing is also an option. Lynn Memorial Auditorium is home to concerts and shows throughout the year, and Lynn Shore offers beautiful sunsets, swimming, and a relaxing place to picnic or walk. Climb to the top of High Rock Park tower to look through the observatory's telescope or just enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding area. Or, if you're looking for something a little different, all of Boston's best museums and attractions are easily accessible by car or commuter rail.
Lynn is home to seventeen elementary schools and several middle and high schools, including vocational high schools, classical high schools, and schools focusing on S.T.E.M. fields to prepare students for further education in the sciences. The Lynn Public Library is a beautiful facility built in 1900 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places thanks to its long history and beautiful architecture.
Though you'll find the biggest and best options in Boston itself, Lynn has a modest offering of entertainment options close to home. Lynn Auditorium hosts several big name shows and concerts each year. The beautiful facility offers convenient parking, ample seating, and easy access that are all marks of a truly successful venue. If easy access to shopping is a priority, Square One Mall in Saugus is your best bet, as you won't find large mainstream shopping centers in Lynn itself. Square One Mall is a 115-store mall just a short drive from almost everywhere in the city of Lynn.
You'll also find excellent dining in Lynn, whether you're craving Mexican or old-fashioned pub food. Try stopping at the Antique Table for fantastic date-night atmosphere and savory Italian cuisine or enjoy a meal on the deck of the Four Winds Pub, where you can enjoy a gorgeous water view and a great meal at the same time.
