If anyone finds themselves of the opinion that small towns can't be hip, residents of Bastrop TX will tell you otherwise. The area was first occupied by a fort placed strategically at a crossing point of the Colorado River. In 1823, the Baron de Bastrop sought Spanish permission to start a German colony in the area but failed. The Baron's coworker and friend, Stephen F. Austin named the area Bastrop in honor of him. In 1827 Austin was able to obtain permission to start a small colony of 100 families in Bastrop and it was incorporated on December 18, 1837. Two years later Austin became the capital of the Republic of Texas and Bastrop became a major supplier of lumber to the newly anointed capital city. Throughout the 1800's the town experienced major misfortune as a fire destroyed most of the buildings downtown in 1869, and creeks flooded during heavy storms rising as high as 46 feet and forcing evacuation. In the 1930's dams were finally built and the area became much less prone to disaster. As the industrial revolution was happening, Bastrop began to experience prosperity and today the population is at an all time high. As Austin has grown, property value soared in the small town for commuters who wanted to live away from the hustle and bustle of their jobs in the nearby capital.
