1. Mediocre Fast Food
Your average burger joints don’t stand a chance in California, at least not while In-N-Out is alive and kicking. Why would someone go get a greasy, fatty burger elsewhere when they can get a greasy, fatty burger here “animal style.”
2. Explaining How Different The Regions Of California Actually Are To Outsiders
Unlike most states, California is big enough that it has several completely different areas, filled with completely different people and completely different ecosystems. It’s one of the most diverse states in the country, as most Californians are easily able to split it into six distinct regions.
3. Unauthentic Mexican Food
Californians get spoiled by having the best Mexican food in America. With such a prominent Hispanic influence, it’s all about the real stuff here, not that Tex-Mex the rest of America gets.
4. Discrimination
Sure, California still has its problems like anywhere else, but California is one of the most accepting places in America. A true melting pot of the West Coast, there’s a community for nearly everyone here.
From the many Pride festivals to the huge diversity of ethnic communities, California is leaps and bounds farther than the rest of the country when it comes to this struggle.
5. Old Sushi
Californians won’t settle for the grocery store sushi that’s been setting out for hours. In the Golden State, they’ve got some of the best sushi chefs making some of the best rolls in the world. They’re truly addicting.
6. Federal Drug Laws
One of a growing number of states in America to allow the legal sale and use of medical marijuana, this is one California state law that goes against everything in place at the federal level. Of course, it was the same way with gay marriage once, too.
7. Mediocre Beaches
It’s California, all the beaches are pristine. Once you’ve grown up in this state, few beaches around the world will actually be up to your standards.
8. Outdated Technology
There’s a reason the world famous Silicon Valley is located in California, people in this state tend to be tech nuts. Don’t expect to see too many Californians still rocking the flip phone.

9. Boring Flags
California has a freaking bear on their flag! A bear! It’s by far the coolest state flag in the country, especially when you compare it to places like Alabama which is literally just a red “x.”
10. Cheap Wine
It’s practically a sin to drink bad wine in California. After all, the state has a rich history in producing some of the tastiest wine in the world right in Napa Valley. If you’re still on the cheap stuff, tour a few wineries and they’ll convert you to at least buying mid-level bottles.
11. Mass-Produced Beer
Home to 509 breweries and growing, California is one place that’s gone all-in with the craft beer movement. The people here aren’t drinking this stuff because they’re pretentious, it’s just that much better than the macro-level national brands.
12. Earthquakes
Every year California has around 10,000 earthquakes. While most of these aren’t detectable, Californians don’t put their lives on hold for this natural occurrence. The building can feel like it’s coming down one moment and everyone is back to work the next.
13. Los Angeles Traffic
Underestimating the Los Angeles traffic can cause serious problems. Nothing is worse than leaving to go somewhere only to realize you have to sit in two hours of extra traffic first.
14. Tourist Infested Areas
It’s not surprising that tourists tend to flock to California, after all it is pretty awesome. Californians can’t do much about it but to try to avoid these confused out-of-towners as much as possible. After all, they’re one of the reasons all the traffic around here is so bad.
15. Bad Weather
When it’s basically 70 and sunny the entire year, people have a hard time adjusting to a little rain. As far as most Californians are concerned, anything that will be falling from the sky should skip over the Golden State.
16. Boring Road Trips
Home to California State Route One, one of the most beautiful drives in the world, Californians are used to driving alongside great views of the Pacific Ocean if they’re making a trip between places like Los Angeles and San Francisco and the cool roads don’t stop there.
There are obviously less interesting parts of the state, but taking a road trip anywhere across this state is sure to be much more interesting than what 99 percent of Americans would see in the place they call home.

17. Music Festivals That Aren’t On Coachella’s Level
An annual music and arts festival held in Indio, Calif., Coachella is one of the best of its type in the world. There’s a reason acts like Daft Punk, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and even the ghost of Tupac have graced the stage. Capable of attracting close to 600,000 screaming fans over six days, Coachella can’t be beat.
18. Sitting On The Couch Doing Nothing
One of the most active states in America, the residents here are constantly on the move. Whether it’s running, biking, or just a stroll around town, Californians can’t sit still for too long.
19. Remembering All Those In-State Rivalries
With five MLB teams, three NFL teams, four NBA teams, three NHL teams, and two MLS teams, along with all of the local college squads, there are way too many fan bases in California to really keep track of them all. Everyone here just kind of picks their favorite for each sport and sticks with it.
20. Waiting For More Redwoods To Start Popping Up
With redwoods taking thousands of years to grow to their enormous height, Californians know that if they don’t protect these trees that they’ll probably never see more in their lifetime. Hence all of the rules to make sure the redwoods keep standing tall for years to come.
21. Frozen Food
Californians have an obsession with buying fresh food. This difference is even easy to see when you’re eating out thanks to the many popular natural and organic restaurants spread around the state.
22. A Constant Stream Of Visitors
If you’re a Californian that has friends elsewhere, you’re probably well used to the problem of people constantly asking you if they can crash on your couch or if you’ll show them around town during a visit. Its fun the first few times, but with how many tourists come to California on a regular basis, it can get annoying fast.
23. Abusing The Environment
Known for being one of the greenest states in the country, Californians are on top of it when it comes to recycling and using cleaner energy. Of course, there’s one smoggy city that tends to be an exception, but for the most part Californians are extremely environmentally conscious.
24. California Bashers
Some Californians might not be aware of it, but there are tons of negative stereotypes floating around America with regards to the Golden State. Whether it’s that California is full of rich snobs or liberal hippies, misconceptions about the people from this state have run rampant.
Sure, a few Cali residents fall into one of these categories, but most of them are completely normal Americans just like everyone else. They just happen to be living in one of the most beautiful and diverse parts of the world.
