Rose Hill has long been a fixture "Between the Rivers." A famous photo of Sherman’s officers sitting around a dining table beside an oak sapling was taken just outside in the front yard. The sprawling Southern estate was later subdivided. One home constructed two doors down belonged to the Rev. Samuel Axson. His daughter, Ellen, would later marry Woodrow Wilson and become First Lady. Among her accomplishments was the creation of the famous Rose Garden at the White House. One can only speculate if she drew her inspiration from the gardens of Rose Hill.
