1. Fry Sauce
What it means everywhere else: Ketchup.
What it means in Utah: A ketchup and mayonnaise concoction used for everything from fries, burgers, and chicken fingers. They even sell it and serve it premade, since there’s nothing worse than trying to mix up your own to dunk your fries in the car.
2. PG
What it means everywhere else: What most kids movies are rated.
What it means in Utah: What your entire state is rated.
3. Snow
What it means everywhere else: That white stuff that falls from the sky that jams up traffic and throws your back out when you have to shovel it.
What it means in Utah: It’s still that white stuff that falls from the sky. But the snow here is known as “the greatest snow on earth.” Hands down, the best skiing snow around.
4. Epic
What it means everywhere else: The word abused all over the internet, denoting something that has reached monumental levels.
What it means in Utah: Epic Brewing Company, the most epic local brew of them all.
5. Jell-O
What it means everywhere else: That jiggly stuff you either loved or hated as a kid. And then in college, but in shot form.
What it means in Utah: Some people will deny Utah’s love for Jell-O, but the tables of every potluck dinner across the state don’t lie.
6. Stake House
What it means everywhere else: A dyslexic steak house.
What it means in Utah: Found all throughout the state, stake houses serve as meeting houses in different neighborhoods for the local congregations of the Latter Day Saints.
7. Swearing
What it means everywhere else: Swear words, curse words, expletives, creative four-lettered words you wouldn’t dare say in front of Grandmomma.
What it means in Utah: Swearing gets a little more creative here in Utah. You’ll hear a lot of “flippins” and “gosh darns.”
8. Star Gazing
What it means everywhere else: Catching a glimpse of a bunch of stars on a super clear night when you’re out in the country.
What it means in Utah: The kaleidoscope sky filled with diamonds that you get to see on a nightly basis.
9. Mirrors
What it means everywhere else: What you use to see your reflection every morning when getting ready for work.
What it means in Utah: The way the water reflects the sky so clear that you can barely tell where one ends and the other begins.
10. Arches
What it means everywhere else: The part of your foot that feels like it’s being impaled every time you try to wear four-inch heels.
What it means in Utah: The natural rock formations that you walk through for good luck. The Rainbow Bridge is 309 feet tall and 278 feet wide.

What it means everywhere else: The ability to see things from different angles.
What it means in Utah: The ability to climb to heights unlike almost anywhere else, to see the entire world not only from new heights, but from a 360 radial view. Who needs meditation when you have Zion?
12. Sand
What it means everywhere else: That stuff you’re washing out of uncomfortable places for days after leaving the beach.
What it means in Utah: The dunes where you spend your weekends off-roading.
13. Ice Cream
What it means everywhere else: Dairy Queen, where Blizzards are your best friend.
What it means in Utah: Dairy Keen, home of the best burgers, milkshakes, and toys trains in the state.
14. Sight-Seeing
What it means everywhere else: Getting to see a few skyscrapers, maybe something like the Grand Canyon upon your travels.
What it means in Utah: Having the entire state of Utah in plain sight. Zion, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Dead Horse Point…Who needs the Grand Canyon when you have all of this?
15. Spring
What it means everywhere else: Finally getting to thaw out from the frigid winter months as the temperatures warm up.
What it means in Utah: Still winter, except now it’s no longer fun at all.
16. Olympics
What it means everywhere else: The biannual sporting event filled with sports you would never otherwise watch or care about.
What it means in Utah: The year of the 2002 Winter Olympics, where traffic and congestion soared to heights almost as high as your new found love for sports you never even heard of, like curling. Admit it, you still have that makeshift curling rink in your backyard, don’t you?
17. Crowns
What it means everywhere else: The gaudy hat kings and queens wear on their heads.
What it means in Utah: It means you’re salivating already because your brain is preparing itself for the greatness of a Crown Burger.
18. Rocks
What it means everywhere else: The things you find along the edge of a lake or driveway.
What it means in Utah: Your terrain. No matter where you go for the rest of your life, you’ll never find rocks that will ever compare to the ones you’ve seen in Utah.
19. Sundance
What it means everywhere else: Poetically, the way the rays from the sun shimmer and bounce off the reflections of the water along the horizon.
What it means in Utah: Only the best, coolest, and most important film festival in the country.
20. Salt
What it means everywhere else: The seasoning you use to get through a meal at your mother-in-law’s.
What it means in Utah: That stuff that makes you float.
21. Taffy
What it means everywhere else: Soft, chewy candy.
What it means in Utah: Salt water taffy made from the water of the Great Salt Lake, a summertime staple and a Utah tradition. There’s a reason why Taffy Town claims to have the “best salt water taffy in the world!”
22. Rainbow
What it means everywhere else: The colors found in the sky after a summer day rainstorm.
What it means in Utah: The colors on your shirt after the Hindu Holi Festival at the Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple. The Holi Festival has been showering locals in color way before those Color Runs made it popular.
23. Shakespeare
What it means everywhere else: Those plays you had to read in high school that still don’t make much sense.
What it means in Utah: The massive Utah Shakespeare Festival that brings thousands out from across the state to celebrate a lot of big words and heavy dresses.
24. Chocolates
What it means everywhere else: Hershey bars, maybe some Nesquick. Whatever it is, it’s always good.
What it means in Utah: Hatch Family Chocolates, those amazing and borderline sinful treats made with love by the couple who calls themselves the Little Chocolatiers.
25. Squeaky Clean
What it means everywhere else: What your house looks like after you’ve had some magical burst of time and energy to scrub it down.
What it means in Utah: It’s not just Utah’s image that is squeaky clean. Everyone is so well-behaved and traditional here, it is almost literally squeaky clean. You might even briefly contemplate whether or not you could eat off of the street.
26. Sunday
What it means everywhere else: The last day of the weekend before you have to go back to work for the week.
What it means in Utah: Sunday Funday! More than half of the state shuts down on Sundays, which means it’s time to get up off your butt and enjoy everything that the great Utah outdoors has to offer.
27. Crazy
What it means everywhere else: Your nutty aunt who has hair higher than the door frames and still sends you checks for $12 on your birthday.
What it means in Utah: Everyone. Yes, everyone here is just a little bit crazy. In the best way possible.
28. Sheep
What it means everywhere else: The things people tell you to count to fall asleep despite the fact that it never works. Also, irresponsible Little Bo Peep’s pet.
What it means in Utah: The Annual Sheep Parade. Duh.
29. Hide And Seek
What it means everywhere else: The game you stopped playing as a kid because you always got stuck hiding behind the shower curtain where your brother would find you two minutes later.
What it means in Utah: A timeless game, made exciting by the never ending nooks, crannies, and crevices.
30. Big Love
What it means everywhere else: That HBO show with the Utah polygamists.
What it means in Utah: That HBO show that made everyone start asking you if you’re a polygamist.
