1. There's No Better Place In Washington To Soak Up Some Sweet, Sweet Vitamin D
The Pacific Northwest has this cloudy-with-a-chance-of-cloudy reputation that's largely accurate, to be honest. However, Spokane manages to capture a few extra rays of sunshine each year, which means residents get enough exposure to make a tan line possible. Woot!
2. Everyone in Spokane Know It's Way Better Than Seattle
Sure, Seattle has its coffee houses and rep as the birthplace of grunge but it's been over 20 years folks—it's time to move on. Spokane is totally where it's at in terms of things to do, food to eat, and yes the sun. The glorious sun! Spokanites aren't pasty mole people and they're damn proud of it.
3. There Are Three Things No Spokanite Can Live Without: Yeast, Malt, And Hops
Spokane sure loves its beer. Sure, other cities might have more renowned breweries but they don’t have better. Which is this city is proud of local breweries like 12 String Brewing Co. and NoLi Brewhouse’s willingness to experiment and the variety of its selection makes this abundantly clear.
Microbreweries rule the roost with IPA, stout, and ale seeming to gain the most traction in recent years. A night out sampling the latest IPA makes for the perfect Spokanite evening, trust me.
4. You Can Actually Afford To Live In This Awesome Place
Normally when you want to buy a house that's anywhere near affordable, you've got to move out to the boonies where there's nothing to do and you're stuck being a hermit for the rest of your life.
Spokanites, however, have the best of both worlds. Property prices are really reasonable, which means you can actually own a home in the city. Yes, Spokanites can still do stuff on weeknights without leaving town.
5. Hoopfest Is A B.F.D. Here
Spokanites take their B-ball seriously. That's never more apparent than at Hoopfest. For the uninitiated, Hoopfest is the largest three-on-three basketball tournament ever in the whole freakin' world. Seriously, it includes 7,000 teams, 450 courts, and spans 42 city blocks. That's one big basketball game! And people here come out in droves to watch the action at the end of June each year. Can't you just smell the sweat of 250,000 spectators and players?
6. Even The Most Citified Spokanite Can Be We A Weekend Warrior Here
Spokane is close to just about every type of thing to do in nature that is… well… natural. It's wedged between mountains, lakes, and a river. So if you're into kayaking, hiking, biking or camping, all your bases are covered. Basically, it's a city-dweller's crunchy paradise and the people here wouldn't have it any other way.
7. The Next Rock God Is Among The People Of Spokane
Artists flock to cities. That's no mystery. But Spokane has the advantage of offering a big city meets small town vibe that creative types really thrive on. It's much better in terms of artist recognition and local musicians and fine artists are more likely to find an enthusiastic audience here. Basically, it's good for the creative soul, man.
8. How It Feels To Run To The Sounds Of A Cheering Crowd
Folks really like to get their jog on in Spokane. That's why Bloomsday is the hot springtime event. Held in May each year, Bloomsday is the largest timed footrace, spanning 7.46 miles and made up of 50,000 runners, joggers, and walkers. Those in wheelchairs participate as do those pushing strollers. Because there's nothing like working on your fitness while thousands cheer you on, right?
9. Lilacs (And The Armed Forces) Are Totally Worth Celebrating
Every town has its parades and festivals but the Spokane Lilac Festival aims to outdo them all. Held every year in May, the festival traditionally celebrates the coming of spring but is mostly a way to recognize the community and the armed forces. In fact, it's the home of the largest Armed Forces Torchlight Parade in the country. It's a way to come together as a city and the people here appreciate that.
10. Kiddos In Spokane Are Never Bored, Thanks To The Riverfront Park
Riverfront Park is the place to go on the weekend. It's like a carnival, park, and mall all-in-one and the people of Spokane take advantage of that fact. It's where Hoopfest and Bloomsday are hosted and it's full of activities for the entire family to enjoy from an IMAX theater to a giant slide constructed in the shape of a Radio Flyer wagon. This park is a one-stop shop, for reals.
