Mountain Pointe High School Phoenix is situated in the fast-growing community of Awatukee in the southern portion of Phoenix. Mountain Pointe is an open boundary school, meaning that any student within a specific boundary zone may attend. It operates under a "closed campus" policy, with only 12th graders allowed to leave the campus during the day, and even they must have special identification and parental permission. The school has returned to a traditional schedule of classes, after originally operating under an alternative time frame. Mountain Pointe currently has a student enrollment of 2,700. If you are interested in relocating to an area within Mountain Pointe's attendance zone, Movoto Real Estate can show you homes available in Awatukee, Phoenix, and some portions of Chandler.

School Overview

Mountain Pointe High School is one of seven schools in the Tempe Union High School District, and in 2010 it became the first to be awarded an A+ rating for excellence. It operates, according to its website, under the triple principles of "Pride, Purpose and Performance." The school's student-chosen mascot is a pride of lions. Opened in 1992, the school has been recognized by Businessweek for innovation in character development and by Redbook Magazine as one of "America's Best Schools.” Mountain Pointe athletic teams have also garnered numerous A1A awards. The "e" in its name stems from "The Pointe" at South Mountain, a former resort which has been renamed Arizona Grand. This high school offers a full course load of academic classes as well as electives, but teaches only Spanish as a foreign language. In addition, it has several "academies" which allow students an in-depth focus on specific interests and career choices. They include STEM, Business, Family and Culinary Arts; Performing Arts; and Sport and Wellness. A schedule change at Mountain Pointe has brought back the Academic Lab, a twice-weekly 38-minute "class period" which allows students an opportunity for academic assistance during the regular daytime schedule. Students may meet with teachers, use the time to study, or take advantage of tutoring help. In order to foster school pride and build spirit, a two-day freshman boot camp is held each year prior to the beginning of classes. Incoming students are required to attend.

What Parents Are Saying

"I am a graduate of Mountain Pointe, and I have nothing but good things to say about it. . . . My experience was extremely positive, and I have nothing but fond memories. As far as I am concerned, I will always be a member of the pride!" "From the beginning the staff and upperclassmen have been awesome. Their two day Freshman boot camp was a huge plus in my son's early success in transitioning to this level. Wish we had that back when I was starting high school" "We love Mountain Point! We actually live in Desert Vista's district, but have chosen to send our kids to MP. It is more diversified, the teachers and staff are wonderful, the courses they offer are exceptional. Principal Kipper has truly turned this into an A+ school!" "What has impressed me the most about MPHS is how the faculty and staff truly care and are looking to help each student succeed."
