When you're moving to Philadelphia, getting to know the personality of the communities in the city and finding the perfect home, condo, or apartment can seem impossible. If you have school-age children, you also have to consider school districts—and evaluating school options as well as the housing possibilities in the same district adds an extra layer of challenge. That's why it's a good idea to start your school search as early as, if not earlier than, your home search itself. Having an idea of the school district you want to land in will give you more direction about where in the city you want to put down roots. Movoto Real Estate can simplify the process and help you find the perfect home in your choice school district.

School Overview

Northeast High School is located in the Rhawnhearst neighborhood of northeast Philly. The school itself offers a variety of AP classes, which about 37 percent of students choose to take. AP classes are available to all students, but Northeast also offers programs available only by special admission. Their medical, aerospace magnet, international baccalaureate, and design programs are only available to students who apply and meet minimum entry requirements. Other programs available to all students include Arts and Education, the Academic Language Program for students whose first language is not English, Global Business, and Health & Medical. For these programs, students choose a "major" at the outset of 10th grade and embark on a series of courses meant to steer them toward success in their chosen field. Academic clubs like National Honor Society, Project SPARC, and Debate Team give students the opportunity to participate in programs that broaden their academic horizons and build their resumes. A huge variety of sports every season and an expansive fine arts program allow students to shine no matter where their interests lie.

What Parents Are Saying

"NEHS is a terrific neighborhood high school." Parents almost universally agree that Northeast is a great high school—for overachieving students. Both parents and students praise the International Baccalaureate, AP, and magnet classes, saying that the teachers and learning environment are fantastic, but non-specialized classes do not receive the same level of praise: "Unless one is in the IB or the Magnet Program, the quality of education greatly diminishes," one parent noted. "I really like the diversity found in the school." Philadelphia is known for its diversity and cultural exchanges, and NEHS offers students a genuine look at what that type of diversity looks like. "The school is well managed and has a caring staff." Teachers that really care about the students are another common theme among reviewers. Though the school is large (well over 3,500 students), both instructors and staff are willing to go out of their way to help students that are willing to learn. The same parent also emphasized that the diversity of extracurriculars, from athletics to musical programs, is a huge benefit. Like This Post? You’ll Definitely Love These:
