Philadelphia offers excellent higher-level educational opportunities, but the city is not known for a stellar public primary and secondary educational school system. There are 340 public schools, 244 private schools, and 89 charter schools within the city limits, and the quality of education varies greatly.
Central High School, located in the Logan area of Philadelphia, is a magnet school steeped in history and tradition. Founded in 1836, CHS is the second longest continuously operating high school in the United States, and is the only high school in the US which can grant a Bachelor’s of Arts degree to qualifying students. Central High School offers students a challenging curriculum which fully prepares them for college. CHS was ranked as the best school in Philadelphia, and the 21st best school in Pennsylvania by U.S News and World Report in 2015.
Students at Central High School Philadelphia have access to take 26 AP courses for college credit, or they may enroll in the school's International Baccalaureate program. While academics take the lead at CHS, students can find great reasons to get out of the classroom. Students at Central can enjoy over 80 extracurricular activities and almost 30 different competitive sport programs.

"We looked around quite a bit, seeking the best possible solution, at all the private and other public schools, including those in the suburbs. The opportunities and help to take advantage of them are there. The diversity in the student body is there. The challenging courses are there."
"Of course, academically, it is superior, but what Central has that other private and public schools don't have is a very diverse student population with students from virtually all corners of the globe. These students are exceptional in so many ways that I cannot begin to list them."
