1. Folks In Nevada Either Have Major Rebel Pride, Or They Run With The Wolf Pack

UNLV has a division one men’s basketball team, and love for the Rebels runs deep. You don’t have to be a student to get worked up during the games at the Thomas and Mack Center, since this team is fun to watch whether you’re a first-time spectator or a die-hard alumni member. But, you don’t cheer for UNLV if you root for the Nevada Wolf Pack, obviously. And that competitiveness runs even deeper during football season.

2. There’s A Big Difference Between North and South Nevada

Other than the weather, which tends to be triple-digit hot in Southern Nevada and cooler up north (no surprise there), there are other differences between the two halves of the state. You know that Northern Nevada tends to be more conservative, given that there are more rural towns, than Southern Nevada, which has a generally more liberal attitude

3. The Correct Way To Pronounce Na-Va-Da

You don’t know why this is still an issue for some people, but you still hear two ways that Nevada is pronounced. Ne-vah-da just makes your skin crawl. If you could advise anyone on this, you would say, “Leave out the “ah” part, and replace it with this: Ne-VA-dah.” Done.

4. Nevadans Don’t Blink An Eye At Slot Machines In The Most Random Places

If it’s unusual to see a slot machine tucked away in a grocery store, or lined up with others at an airport, than Nevada has yet to get the memo. You can find a slot machine buzzing away at a spot that would seem peculiar anywhere else, but in bigger cities here, it’s more of an everyday thing. You don't bat an eye at someone testing his or her luck on your errand run. More power to ‘em.

5. Nevadans Still Hope That Maybe, Just Maybe, They’ll Hit The Jackpot

You may be desensitized to the bright lights of a casino, and you may know what groupings you need to win on a standard slot machine, but you’re not completely hardened by the amount of gambling you’ve seen. You remember the “I was just shopping when I won the jackpot” stories, and you secretly hope – despite all odds – that the next big winner could be you.

6. Nevadans Can Spot A “Burner” From A Mile Away

The weeklong “Burning Man” festival may raise a few eyebrows because of its desert location but the majority of its rebel reputation comes from the festivalgoers themselves. Imaginative costumes are usually saved for the desert, but people who live in the small towns on the way to the grounds can still spot a “burner” when he or she stops by.

7. There Is A Whole Lot More To The Silver State Than Las Vegas

Sin City may be Nevada’s brightest tourist destination, perhaps literally and figuratively, but Las Vegas doesn’t describe the whole of what you can find here. In fact, the suburban neighborhoods and quiet homes outside Vegas – like in Henderson or Mesquite – can paint a completely opposite portrait of everyday life here than what the Strip portrays.

8. Nevadans Are Happy To Leave The The Strip To Out-Of-Staters—Mostly

No, Vegas locals don’t live in hotels and eat every meal at a buffet. In fact, locals usually steer clear of the Strip. But when a good show comes into town, or a restaurant sounds too good to pass up, you make an exception. If anything, you know that you can’t beat the people watching. This logic doesn’t just apply to Vegas, either. The same can be said about downtown Reno, too.

9. Folks In Nevada Know The Best Sunsets In The World Happen Over The Desert

Maybe we’re biased, but Nevada sunsets are absolutely stunning. Maybe it’s the way the mountains are a dark contrast to the pink skies, or how the vast openness of the desert makes the sky seem larger. Either way, Nevadans are spoiled—especially in the cooler months. Did we miss anything? Tell us what you think is unique about Nevada in the comments below!
