1. For Mississippians, It’s All About The Battle Of The Egg
When two teams go head to head more than 100 times over the years, the rivalry can get pretty intense. And so it is between the Ole Miss Rebels and the MSU Bulldogs in the Egg Bowl.
In fact, the fans got so heated a brawl erupted one year. Ever since, they have the golden egg trophy to redirect the fans’ animosity. The trophy may have quelled the riot, but the fans still find ways to rile one another up.
2. Everyone In Mississippi Is Hooked On The Sauce
Fondly referred to as “the kissing cousin to remoulade,” comeback sauce is a highly addictive dipping sauce made of mayo, chili sauce, and a few other key ingredients.
This stuff is just so dang good who can blame them for putting it on practically everything: salad, boiled shrimp, onion rings, fried pickles, fried green tomatoes, fried mushrooms, and just about anything else you can think of.
It’s not a condiment… It’s a way of life!
3. Folks In Mississippi Know Their Way Around A Bible
There’s the Bible Belt, and then there’s the Baptist Belt. And Mississippians are squarely in that region. Sixty percent of Mississippians are religious, making them one of the most religious states in the nation, and of that, 36 percent are affiliated with a Baptist church.
So chances are, if you want a bible quote, a Mississippian can give it you, line and verse!
4. Mississippians Never Ever Forget Their Manners
Mississippi isn’t called the “Hospitality State” for nothing! They take their southern charm seriously down here. At a very young age you are taught to say please and thank you. You hold the door open and always help a stranger out in need.
5. Everyone Is Going To Know Your Business—Best To Accept It And Keep It Moving
Mississippi is a big state with a small-town feel. Everyone knows everyone so there are no secrets here. But that can be a good thing, too, because whenever you have a problem, someone has a brother or a cousin who can help you fix it.
6. Folks Here Prefer To Move At An Easier Pace
Want to test a Mississippian’s limit of Southern charm, try rushing them.
Life in Mississippi moves at slower pace, because people here prefer to drink every experience in. So they take their time getting going but rest assured they will get the job done.
7. Going Barefoot Is Perfectly Acceptable Here
Mississippi is filled with beautiful parks, rambling woods, and endless flora and fauna, and Mississippians grew up running wild in them. It is nothing to fling off your shoes and hop in a nearby swimming hole to cool off during the humid summer months.
8. Mississippians Don’t Just Get The Blues; They Invented Them
Blues music was birthed in the Mississippi Delta, where the soil was rich and the people were poor, so the attachment that Mississippians have to it, even today, is understandable.
There’s something about the way the harmonica and slide guitar work in unison to convey the relentless perseverance of an entire state.
9. Everyone Here Knows How To MacGyver An Air Conditioner Out Of A Bucket
Summers in Mississippi are hot, so Mississippians have to get resourceful in finding ways to keep cool. For about $8 and 10 minutes of their time, they know a five-gallon bucket and a fan can do the trick. Fans and wet towels are also employed with regularity. And Mississippians are not above putting a baby pool in their yard.
Hey, there’s no judgment here.
10. If A Mississippian Leaves The Nest, They Just Can’t Wait To Get Back
Many Mississippians have attempted to leave their state at some point in their lives—but very few can resist the call back home.
It might be the strong sense of family and community. Or because they begin to appreciate the slower pace of life. Or maybe it’s the low cost of living, the natural beauty and the rich cultural heritage the state has to offer. Ultimately though, Mississippi will always be home.
