Michigan borders four of the five Great Lakes and has about 65,000 inland lakes and ponds. Living in Michigan means you are never more than 85 miles from a Great Lake. The state is divided into 2 large areas known as the Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula, which are separated by The Straits of Mackinac. The straits connect Lake Huron and Lake Michigan.
