1. When The Sun’s Up, Lubbock Folks Have Their Guns Up
Nothing comes before Texas Tech football in Lubbock. The city turns red, white and black as everyone cheers on and shows support for their beloved team in Red Raider National.
There are two ways to tell if someone's a Texas Tech fan. One, if the person in question lives in Lubbock, duh. Two, if they’ve got their “guns out.” This hand signal is one of the coolest around—even if it does hearken back to some of the less-than-civilized days of Lubbock.
2. The Word “Sooner” Is A One-Way Ticket Out Of Town
If someone just can’t get into the whole college football thing, that’s okay. No one here is going to make them pack their bags and ship out. That is, unless you root for the Sooners.
The Texas Tech rivalry with the Oklahoma Sooners runs like the Nile: Deep and long. So when you’re in Lubbock, you really only have two options—you cheer for Texas Tech or you cheer for no one at all.
3. Lubbock Folks Never Say "No" To A Giant Plate Of Fried Cheese
It’s game day. You’ve had your gun out all day. Now what you can go for is a big plate of something as unhealthy as it is delicious. Nothing does the trick better than a plate of deep fried cheese from Spanky's. It's an institution here.
This dish may not be too swanky, but it’s as much of a delicacy here as escargot is to Paris. No one should ever leave without having some.
4. People In Lubbock Are Smokin’ Hot In More Ways Than One
It’s no secret that Lubbock is a hot state, what with the serious barbecue and Tex-Mex. But just take a look around Texas Tech campus and you'll realize what it really means to say Lubbock is hot.
Playboy magazine ranked the female students at the school as being the second hottest in the country. The whole country. Not that you needed to be told that, as long as your eyes work.
5. Even The Dogs In Lubbock Know The Music Never Really Died
Buddy Holly is legend everywhere, but in Lubbock he's a bona fide Greek god. If Greek gods wore slim cut suits and wide, black-rimmed glasses while playing guitar, of course.
Lubbock folks have the Buddy Holly statues, the Buddy Holly museum, posters, festivals, fan t-shirts, and everyone down to the dogs sporting his signature eyewear. Even after "American Pie," the people in Lubbock know the music never died—it will only live on.
6. Everyone In Lubbock Knows Hayrides Are Better In Cotton
Lubbock is brimming with such a rich and diverse culture: Music, food, and sports. But cotton is what put Lubbock on the map in the first place. Those miles and miles of fields aren't just for show—they make a third of all the cotton in the country. Seriously.
And it not only puts (comfortable) clothes on your back, it makes for some epic hayrides.
7. Lubbock Folks All Have Bigger Haboobs Than You
Don't be fooled—sweltering heat heat isn’t the only thing that Lubbock folks deal with when it comes to freaky weather.
In the winter, the ice storms land on headline news as a joke for the rest of the country—which pretends they have any idea what a Southern freeze-over is actually like. And the haboobs leave every car in Lubbock covered in two inches of dust. No wonder these folks are so tough.
8. Everyone In Lubbock Is Proud To Keep It Old-Fashioned
Lubbock is heaven on Earth for people who enjoy a slower, old-fashioned way of life. The Bay Area Center for Voting Research ranked Lubbock as being the 2nd most conservative city in the entire country—which doesn't really surprise locals at all.
Lubbock folks would rather spend a low-fi night at their Stars & Stripes Drive in Theater with family and friends, sitting in the popped-open trunk of their car, watching a movie on the big screen. Now that's a party.
9. Lubbock Folks Know They’re The Center Of The South Plains
When you live in Texas, you get used to the jokes. When you’re a city in Texas that isn’t famous for being hipster, you get used to a lot of jokes. But no one in Lubbock cares because the joke is on everybody else.
Lubbock is the economic, healthcare, cultural, and education hub of the South Plains. Not to mention the amazing music scene, killer food, die hard sports fans, and a community that isn’t afraid to stand by what they believe. They don’t call it the Hub City for nothing.
