1. The Fried Chicken Aficionado
Everyone in the country knows that if you want the best fried chicken around, you need to head straight towards the Bluegrass State.
Among the residents of Kentucky, you’re sure to find a few people able to rank every fried chicken establishment within a 200 miles radius. Perhaps they could provide some insight with regards to the long term health effects of KFC’s “Double Down.”
2. Rick Pitino’s Biggest Fan
It doesn’t take long in Louisville to realize that the Cardinal’s basketball coach has been elevated to hero status. Not only are Louisville locals obsessed with the U of L basketball team, most of them have quite the crush on the coach, too.
3. Crazy Cats Fans
Known for their tendency to take to the streets of Lexington win or lose, Wildcats fans are some of the craziest around. They know how to have a good time and they aren’t too shy about it, often making national news after a big game.
If you’re in Lexington on game day, don’t expect your night to end when the final buzzer sounds.
4. The Derby Expert
While most locals are over the Kentucky Derby by now, there are still a select few who dedicate their year to educating themselves on the sport in an attempt to better predict which horse will cross the finish line first on the big day.
It has yet to be determined if these many hours spent studying race results are actually beneficial or if they’re a complete waste of time.
5. The Girl Who’s Always Posting Pictures With Her Horse
Horses seem to be everywhere in Kentucky. Everyone knows somebody that knows somebody that’s always out riding.
Every Kentuckian also has that one person on their Facebook feed that is constantly sharing selfies with their horses in an attempt to show the world how much they love riding. You have a horse, you ride it a lot.
…We get it.
6. That Redneck Down The Road
No small town in Kentucky would be complete without the famous local redneck.
Known for their ability to fill jugs with moonshine and somehow turn overalls into a fashion statement, these folks should never be discouraged. After all, they add quite a bit of flavor to the local culture.
7. The Captain
Kentucky has tons of water and subsequently a ton of boats, which almost always come with a captain. Everyone knows that one guy who loves to head to the lake as much as possible with their boat in tow.
But who can blame them? Few things are as freeing as controlling a speeding watercraft as it swiftly glides around on top of the glass-like surface of a lake.
8. The Bourbon Snob
Until recently, bourbon could only be called “bourbon” if it was made in Kentucky. While that rule has changed, it hasn’t cut down on the number of self-proclaimed “Kentucky bourbon experts.”
While these guys might be nice to have around while you’re picking out a nice bottle of bourbon for a special family occasion, don’t even think about ordering Jack Daniel’s around them at the local bar.
9. The Civil War Reenactor
Kentucky played a huge role in the Civil War and evidence can be found everywhere. A certain group of people tend to get pretty wrapped up in this era, recreating their favorite battles fully decked out in replica gear.
To people from other parts of the country, this might seem like a little foreign, but a trip to the battlefield during a reenactment always entertaining.
10. The Local Bluegrass Band
A state rich with a history in twangy, upbeat grooves, it’s common to encounter live music frequently at bars and pubs all across Kentucky. Every town has that one band that’s a local favorite.
While all Kentuckians might not be pumping bluegrass music through their headphones, no one will complain when a few musicians take the stage.
11. The Pickup Truck Owners
Every state is home to a few pickups, but most aren’t home to as many as Kentucky. While most truck owners across the country only really put their beds to use come moving day, people with trucks in Kentucky can move toys like 4-wheelers and speed boats from place to place.
If someone owns a truck here, expect it to get a little dirty from time to time.
12. That Person Who “Hates Kentucky”, But Never Leaves
Every Kentuckian knows that one person who claims to hate being in the Midwest but just keeps sticking around. Either Kentucky is too boring or there aren’t enough big cities, whatever the reason, they’ll always be complaining.
However, if they ever actually manage to pack up and head elsewhere, it’s a sure thing that they’ll miss home before too long.
13. That Sweet Old Lady Who Makes Awesome Comfort Food
She might be your grandma, she might work at the local diner, perhaps she shows up at church when there’s a potluck, but every Kentuckian knows that one elderly lady who makes the best stuffing around.
Comfort food is an important part of the cuisine of this state and it wouldn’t be nearly as noteworthy without the locally-famous family recipes that make it happen.
14. Guy With Antlers Covering Every Inch Of His House
Hunting is a big deal in Kentucky and it takes a special type of person to wake up at the crack of dawn knowing that they’ll be spending hours in the underbrush with the hopes that they might possibly bring home a little bit of fresh meat.
Their closet will be filled with camo, their cabinets filled with ammo, and their walls filled with antlers and taxidermy heads.
To an out-of-towner visiting Kentucky for the first time, they might find some people’s obsession with the hunt a bit strange, but in Kentucky, it’s just another awesome way of life.
