Jackson is not only the largest city in Mississippi, but also the capital of the state of Mississippi. The largest portion of the city is located in Hinds County, while the remaining smaller sections are actually classified in Madison County or Rankin County. Jackson also provides public transportation throughout the city via the city bus, Jatran. It runs set routes each day, except Sunday. The fares are quite reasonable, averaging $1.50 with transfers between routes free. Where to live in Jackson MS is an important decision to consider, especially if you don't have a car. You might want to consider three neighborhoods for their short walking distance to most any city life. Living in these three neighborhoods puts you in walking distance to shopping, dining, and medical care - basic needs for someone who does not have a car.

From the population, black people are in the vast majority at 80%; white people at 17%; Hispanic people at 2%; and Asian, American Indian, Pacific Islander, Native Hawaiian, and those of two or more races, and other races make up less than 1% of the population. Approximately 46% of the population in Jackson is male, and females make up about 54%. The average age of those who reside in Jackson is about 32, compared to MS's average age of about 37. Of Jackson residents that are 15 years or older, about 46% of Jackson's population have never married, and about 33% are currently married. Also from that group, there are about 11% that are divorced, about 5% that are widowed, and about 4% that are separated. A high school education or higher was attained by close to 83% of the population that is 25 years or older, and a bachelor's degree was attained by 25%. Nine percent of that group even have a graduate or higher level professional degree. Jackson's average income per household in 2013 was $29,811. The per capita income in 2013 was $17,116.
The American Planning Association named the neighborhood of Belhaven one of the "Ten Great Neighborhoods for 2014." The top ten neighborhoods are announced each year to model the "gold standard" in terms of communities that have a true feel of cultural and historical interest, community involvement, and a future vision for the neighborhood. Belhaven is a particularly good choice if you need quick access often for excellent healthcare. There is even a Jatran Belhaven route that is very convenient to access for Belhaven residents.
The Baptist Medical Center: Residents can basically go across the street from their subdivision to go to doctor visits, maternity care, or even for surgery at the Baptist Medical Center located on North State Street. The hospital boasts 564 beds, the MS Hospital for Restorative Care, the Colonnade, and offers many healthcare services and programs for the Jackson community. The Baptist Medical Center provides top notch health care, ranking as one of the most advanced medical facilities in the State of Mississippi.
The University of Mississippi Medical Center: This facility is located to the north of the Greater Belhaven Neighborhood. This hospital is Mississippi's only academic health science center, conducting leading research and offering "cutting edge patient care." Three hospitals are located on the University of MS Medical Center's main campus: Mississippi's only children's hospital, a hospital for women and infants, and a critical care hospital.
The Mississippi Methodist Rehabilitation Center: This facility is the only comprehensive rehabilitation hospital in Mississippi for those who have suffered stroke, brain, or spinal injury. The Mississippi Methodist Rehabilitation Center has been named one of "America's Best" two different times by U.S. News and World Report.
If you want to live near arts and entertainment, then Fondren may be the best selection for you. It's known as the arts district in Jackson. Musical concerts, author signings, gallery openings, and food tasting events are regular happenings in the Fondren district. With all these artistic people in the district, you can imagine that the boutiques in Fondren are very unique and eclectic as well. Residents enjoy fabulous shopping near their homes. After a day of shopping, many residents stop for a coffee or a bite to eat in one more than twenty terrific local restaurants, bars, coffee shops and bakeries all within walking district of the Fondren neighborhood. You can catch the Jatran to zip around town at several nearby stops too, but if you're just going within the Fondren businesses district at lunch time, take the Fondren Express. This trolley-looking bus runs daily service at lunch time around Fondren and the nearby medical community for only seventy-five cents per round trip!
Serious Shopping: Fondren was featured in 2012 in the popular magazine Southern Living in an article called, "Where to Shop Now: Jackson's Fondren." With that kind of recognition, you know the boutiques are original and worthy of visiting. The business district in Fondren has many types of stores, like antique shops, gift shops, and clothing boutiques. Small local shops mean no more long lines and shop owners and store employees who really know the merchandise. You'll get great customer service while browsing individual, unique merchandise. And all this will be within walking distance from your own front door when you live in Fondren.
Broadmoor is a neighborhood located just north of downtown Jackson. The borders of Broadmoor run roughly from North West Street to the east, I-55 to the west, Meadowbrook Road to the north, and East Woodrow Wilson Avenue to the south. The northern section of the neighborhood is where most of the residential area is found. It incudes a number of single family homes in addition to some homes for rent or lease. Talk about walkability - This neighborhood is close to so many things within only one mile: 10 grocery stores, 20 food or drink establishments, 18 schools, 20 shops, and 5 fitness facilities. Now that's a lot of errands you can take care of from simply taking a short walk from your own front door! If you prefer to ride, though, you can always jump on the Jatran Route 7.
