With a population of just under 86,000 as of 2013, Carmel is the fifth largest city in the state of Indiana and one of the most liveable. Carmel was selected by CNN Money magazine as the Best Place to Live in the United States in 2012. It is located directly north of Indianapolis and is less than a 20-minute drive away. While the housing market has remained steady with a slight rise, the area is known for its economic growth and upscale neighborhoods.

Carmel is widely known for its many doctors' offices, healthcare facility and hospitals. St. Vincent's Carmel Clarion North is a well-known cardiac care center. It is easily accessible from the highway as well as the internal corridors of the city. Methodist Sports Med Center is also close by offering treatment for many amateur and professional athletes in the area. The hospitals and healthcare facilities in the area are some of the best in the nation for offering the highest quality of care possible.
Being only a few miles north of Indianapolis, residents can travel south on College Avenue and find some of the most unique nightspots in the city. From the old theater style Vogue to more trendy venues like the Jazz Kitchen and Birdy's Bar and Grill, there is something for everyone. Continuing south towards the Circle, you can find a variety of theaters, restaurants and nightclubs to choose from.

Castleton Square Mall located on the northeast corner of Indianapolis is only a short drive away. Along with all of the shopping areas to be found in downtown Indianapolis, Carmel also offers a wide variety of quaint shops in its downtown area as well. Westfield, Fishers and other nearby communities also offer a diverse selection of shops and stores to explore. From eclectic art to fashionable clothing, there is literally something for every style and taste.
Predominantly white collar employment opportunities are available in the area. Carmel sets along what is known as the Meridian Corridor. Along this specific stretch of highway, there are many multi-million dollar business headquarters, including those of Delta Faucet, ITT Technical Institute, MISO, CNO Financial Group and Allegion. The average income per household is slightly over $100,000, with the per capita average being closer to $85,000. Unemployment in the area is less than 4.5%, which is lower than the rest of the state reporting in at 6.6%.

Carmel is full of places to go and things to see. From walking the Monon Trail to visiting one of the many art exhibits in the area, life in the suburbs is never dull. The Carmel Arts & Design District offers many different types of artistic attractions, ranging from conceptual to abstract. The Carmel Monon Community Center includes a full fitness center as well as large water park. The multi-million dollar facility opened its doors in 2007 and is located in Central Park. One of the most unique parks in the Carmel area is the Japanese Garden, which was dedicated in 2009 as a joint endeavor with its sister city, Kawachinagano, Japan. The Carmel Farmers Market is one of the largest in the area and offers all types of merchandise and produce. Near the downtown Carmel area, you can find the $300 million multi-use facility known as the Carmel City Center. The Center houses the Tarkington, The Paladium and the Center for the Performing Arts.
Carmel has many public and private schools available to the residents in the area. Carmel High School is one of the highest ranking in the state. There is also University High School, the Midwest Academy and over 11 other elementary schools, all totaling close to 14,500 students currently enrolled. Schools in the are well known for their athletic programs as well as for Arts and Academic curriculums.
Carmel is well known for its many awards as well. Along with being CNN Money's Best City for 2012, it also ranked #3 in Money Magazine's Best City in the United States category. It has been recognized nationally for its efforts to improve traffic safety with the installation of 80 roundabouts throughout the entire city. The roundabouts have eliminated close to 100 traffic lights and reduced the incidents of fatalities due to disregarding lights and stop signs in dramatic fashion.
