School Overview
Wilson Elementary School Houston is located in Houston’s inner loop, and serves the Montrose and Hyde Park areas within the Houston Independent School District.
Montessori schools offer an alternative and immersive form of education that has historically led to higher test scores and a more diverse learning experience. In fact, the Friends of Montessori (FOM), a non-profit group, took over this public school over in 2005, and changed its name to Wilson Montessori from Wilson Elementary School. The school currently has 500 students and has a student to teacher ratio of 17:1, meaning students have the opportunity for individualized attention.
Since the Montessori program has been implemented in Wilson Montessori, students have scored higher on standardized tests than the Houston average. The school offers bilingual programs, classes in the fine arts, and even provides parent literacy and training classes to help them improve their own child’s learning experience. Montessori programs also include self-directed learning, which means children can help form their own curriculum in order to explore the topics and subjects they’re interested in.
Wilson Montessori offers elementary school students a hands-on experience. For example, students may learn about mathematics in unorthodox but helpful ways, such as through the use of pink building blocks. These kind of methods can help students visualize problems and increase spatial reasoning. There is also a special education program within the school as well that offers 6 teachers dedicated solely to working with special needs students. The school was last renovated in 2004 but recently received almost $19 million for an expansion that will be finished in late 2015 or early 2016.
Wilson Montessori is also dedicated to ensuring children receive the nutrition necessary for healthy development. Their meal program has a focus on proteins, grains, fruits, and vegetables and has little sugar or artificial flavors. In fact, Wilson Montessori also runs an education program for adults on how to keep kids healthy at home.
What Parents Are Saying
“The school walks the fine line between true Montessori and HISD/state requirements very well. It took awhile for the school to find its balance, but with active parents, a great principal and terrific teachers, I can't recommend it enough.”
“We have two children at Wilson, 3rd and 5th grades, who have been in the Montessori program since its start there. The growth has been remarkable and we are very pleased. The teaching staff are excellent, dual certified, dedicated and creative. We are grateful to have had this option.”
“This is my daughter's first year at Wilson Montessori and we have been very pleased! She is in Pre-K and is thriving. The students seem happy and engaged in the Montessori environment.”
