Houston, it’s pretty clear from the beginning what an exciting city it is. There are more museums than you can count on your fingers and toes, there’s the zoo, jogging trails, nature centers, amusement parks, theaters, and enough restaurants to last you for years.
There truly is something to do in Houston for everyone, but when it comes to actually finding a place to live, you might want to head just a little bit
outside of the city. Especially if you’re a young couple.
Today we’re looking at the 10 best Houston suburbs for young couples. We came up with this list by considering the median income, the median home value, crime data, and how many residents were young adults, children, and married couples. We also awarded bonus points to places that local Movoto broker
Melissa Allison recommended for young couples.
1. Richmond
Key Stats:
- Population between 22-34: 23.2 percent
- Median home value: $96,300
- Crimes per 100k: 1,951
Whether you’re a couple, you’re single, you’re retired, or you’re fresh out of college, Richmond is just a flat out great place to live near Houston (which is precisely why it recently came in as
Houston’s best suburb overall).
The reason this suburb is so superb for young couples in particular is that it’s actually affordable—a huge help for those looking to start a family in the near future. Allison recommends looking into the Aliana community.
You can also hit up the Hillcrest area, home to many larger houses, or Winston Terrace, where you’ll find some of the city’s older and more classic homes.
2. Rosenberg
Key Stats:
- Population under five: 8.6 percent
- Population between 22-34: 20.7 percent
- Median home value: $110,300
What’s the big deal about this city? First and foremost, it’s young. Not only will you and your partner have plenty of other young couples to hang out with, but your little kids will too.
It’s also something of a cultural mecca outside of Houston. There are restaurants, art galleries, museums, two theaters, and a burgeoning creative scene in general. In fact, The Texas Commission of Arts has designated Historic Downtown Rosenberg an official Cultural District.
3. Pearland
Key Stats:
- Population under five: 9.1 percent
- Married population: 62.4 percent
- Median household income: $92,346
Pearland is filled with little kids. There are some of the most tots under five running around in here than anywhere around Houston.
Don’t worry, Pearland has plenty to keep your little ones—and you—entertained. There’s a weekly farmer’s market, the Pearland Town Center (an outdoor shopping area), the beautiful Centennial Park, Bogie’s Pearland for a dip in the summer, gyms, summer camps, and even some awesome bikram yoga.
4. League City
Key Stats:
- Population under five: 7.9 percent
- Married population: 60.7 percent
- Median household income: $89,339
League City is a community for everyone. You want to be outside? Head to one of the four marinas in the area and get on the water. You can go golfing, go for a run, or just go hang out in one of the nearly 20 parks in the area.
If it’s August and 100 degrees and muggy out, stick inside—there are plenty of restaurants, two museums (including a children’s museum for all of those residents under five), dance studios, and a magical place called Jumping World. Your kids will love it.
4. Sugar Land
Key Stats:
- Married population: 64.4 percent
- Median household income: $104,702
- Crimes per 100k: 2,062
The main reason Sugar Land is so great for young couples is that it’s pretty much filled with nothing but couples.
It has more married residents than most anywhere in the area, and, of course, there’s plenty to do here with your newfound married friends—and soon even more, with a new arts and entertainment center being built to house concerts, skating, and events right in the city’s center.
Not only is this good for business in the area, but it will provide another option for young couples and families looking for a great night out.
6. The Woodlands
Key Stats:
- Married population: 63.7 percent
- Median household income: $106,286
- Crimes per 100k: 1,403
Like Sugar Land, The Woodlands is expensive, it’s safe, and residents make a whole lot of money—in fact, they have the highest median household income in the Houston area.
The homes here are large, single family homes, many of which cost well over $278,000 (the median home price for the area).
Your kids can play outside on the quiet, tree-lined neighborhood streets—or if you’re not quite there yet, you can go for a run or a bike ride and feel safe about it.
7. Katy
Key Stats:
- Married population: 59.6 percent
- Median household income: $68,953
- Median home value: $150,200
Allison said that Katy is “one of the fastest-growing, family-oriented, and excellent communities” near Houston. She highly recommended Cinco Ranch, a new master-planned community.
For those young couples looking to start a family, know that the schools here are top notch. Second, know that there are plenty of things to do with your partner, like dining at one of the over 500 restaurants or going to see a movie at the new Alamo Drafthouse.
8. Atascocita
Key Stats:
- Population between 22-34: 18.8 percent
- Married population: 57.8 percent
- Median household income: $82,028
Atascocita has a built in community of peers for young couples, since a lot of residents here are married and in their 20s or early 30s.
There are restaurants here to last you a lifetime, from barbecue at Tin Roof to Mediterranean food at Savvas Greek Cuisine & Grill.
There are also theaters, movie theaters, and for those of you who do have young kids, plenty of sports leagues, dance classes, and even a new Girls on the Run Club.
9. Spring
Key Stats:
- Population under five: 7.8 percent
- Population between 22-34: 18.9 percent
- Median home value: $110,600
Spring is one of the more affordable options outside of Houston, mostly dotted with single family homes with a median price of about $110,000. Compare that to, say, the Woodlands, where the median home value is around $278,000, and it’s clear why more young people tend to flock to Spring.
Spring is a great place to start a new family. There are several local elementary schools like George E. Anderson, Chet Burchett, and Northgate Crossing. There are four middle schools, and a good high school, and even after that, a nearby community college.
10. Oak Ridge North
Key Stats:
- Married population: 66.1 percent
- Median household income: $96,818
- Crimes per 100k: 969
As their motto says, Oak Ridge really is “What a Hometown Should Be.” It’s the safest place outside of Houston, it has the most married couples for miles, residents make more money here than most anywhere.
There may not be a lot to do in Oak Ridge, but that’s really the basis of its appeal. It’s quiet, it’s safe, and it’s an escape from city life.

Our Methodology
We created this one by gathering up all of the largest places outside of Houston. Then, with sources like the
U.S. Census and
AreaVibes, we looked at each place in terms of these criteria:
- Percent of population under five
- Percent of population between 22 and 34
- Percent of population that’s married
- Median household income
- Median home value
- Crimes per 100K people
We added in some “bonus points” to the suburbs that were recommended by local broker Melissa Allison and then ranked each of our 22 suburbs with scores from one to 22 in each category.
Finally, we averaged these scores out into one overall score for each place. The 10 lowest scores went to our 10 winners.
