1. Cheerwine Courses Through Fayettevillians’ Veins
Saying that Fayettevillians are huge fans of the North Carolina original beverage isn’t enough—they practically live for the stuff. Cheerwine goes perfectly with anything BBQ, whether it’s pork ribs, chicken, steak… you name it! People have even been known to call ahead to make sure a restaurant will carry their favorite drink before eating there.
Cheerwine is definitely their beverage of choice, and just a taste of the cherry-flavored soda can bring a smile to any Fayettevillian’s face. They drink so much of it that it’s surprising their lips aren’t stained a permanent shade of Cheerwine red.
2. People Here Will Never Turn Down A Good Pig Pickin’
I swear, Fayettevillians can smell a roasting pig from miles away. They love nothing better than being able to pick off whatever meat they want from a whole hog, and don’t even get them started on craklins! Those sinfully delicious pork skins will make any Fayettevillian’s mouth water just at the thought of them.
They’re always looking for any excuse to hold one of these cook outs. Many will even throw a pig on the BBQ for holidays instead of the traditional Thanksgiving turkey or Christmas ham. But Fayettevillians know that anytime is a good one for a pig pickin’, especially when there’s a secret family BBQ sauce to slather all over your food.
3. Fayettevillians Could Survive On The Surface Of A Terrifically Humid Sun
While outsiders may find the excruciating Fayetteville heat to be intolerable, locals don’t mind it at all. They were born and bred in the environment and are used to the tough climate, hardly batting an eye when the weather creeps up into the 90s. Plus, that’s just a good excuse to head out to a swimming hole.
But snow? That’s a completely different story. While Fayetteville can get snow in the winter, there’s usually not enough of it to amount to much of anything. So even a mere inch of it can cause uncontainable excitement in the average Fayettevillian.
4. Locals Can Practically Navigate The City By Strip Club Lights
With all the strip clubs in the downtown area, Fayettevillians have been become incredibly accustomed to seeing all their blindingly bright signs.
It doesn’t matter if they’ve stepped foot in one of the joints or not. Locals can still recognize exactly where they are based on which club signs are lighting up the streets, especially on Bragg Boulevard with its bright strip club glow. Who needs a GPS when you’ve got neon signs.
5. Fayettevillians Don’t Stray Far When It Comes To Vacationing
Fayettevillians see no need to spend elaborate amounts of money on vacations in far off exotic destinations. They’re completely happy with visiting all the great spots that are practically in their own back yard.
When in need of a break from their day-to-day life, locals simply hop in their car and drive a few hours away to reach popular spots like Sunset or Carolina Beach, for surf and sand, or the nearby mountains to enjoy hiking or mountain biking. They can even head off to relatively close ski resorts for some cold weather and snow.
6. Fayettevillians Live Life In The Fast Lane
Fayetteville is teeming with avid NASCAR fans who go crazy over fast cars in all shapes and sizes. The best way to spend an afternoon is with their eyes glued to the television screen as they root for their favorite racer and watch the speeding cars whiz pass.
But they don’t merely settle for watching from the sidelines. Locals also hop behind the wheel themselves at local speedways. It’s there that true speed lovers really thrive, going faster than they could anywhere else and enjoying that great big adrenaline rush.
7. Everyone’s A G.I. Or Knows Someone Who Is
With the major U.S. army installation, Fort Bragg, located there, Fayetteville is a military city in the truest sense. Pretty much every resident is linked to the military in some way, whether they’re in it themselves or know someone who is.
The city adopted the slogan, “America’s First Military Sanctuary Community” in 2008, proving just how invested people are in supporting their troops. And Fayettevillians continue to help and volunteer as much as they can, taking part in military-oriented organizations like Fayetteville Cares and The Army’s Army.
They even have a field of honor, where people plant an American flag in recognition of someone who has served or is currently serving. The people there just can’t escape Fort Bragg’s influence, and they wouldn’t want to even if they could.
8. People Here Live For 4th Fridays
Fayettevillians make sure to mark their calendar for the fourth Friday of each and every month. They never want to miss the Fayetteville art council’s monthly Fourth Friday event, where the streets are transformed into a celebration of arts and the downtown area.
On any one of these Fridays, you’ll find locals taking advantage of the free event, stopping by the artsy features in local shops and enjoying the many exhibits, fabulous entertainment, delicious food and talented artists. It’s one the most fun things to do in the area, and people would be completely lost without it.
9. Fayetteville Is Full Of Donut Snobs
While the rest of America may run on Dunkin, Fayettevillians won’t eat anything but Krispy Kremes. They find it a delicious treat, a perfect way to start the morning and a melt-in-your-mouth post-church snack. Plus, Krispy Kreme originated in North Carolina, so loving their donuts is basically a Fayettevillian’s birthright.
When driving past a Krispy Kreme, it’s impossible for Fayetteville residents not to stop in for a little treat, usually only to leave with an entire box of donuts. It doesn’t matter if it’s a classic glazed or a more decadent caramel Dutch apple pie donut, people can’t resist indulging in a bite (or two or three or four…).
10. Fayettevillians All Think Their Grandma’s Biscuit Recipe Is Best
Fayettevillians can’t get enough of those hot, fresh, fluffy Southern staples. People are so addicted to biscuits here that they’ll practically go into withdrawals when they’ve gone too long without one. They’ll eat them with absolutely anything, serving them up during breakfast, lunch and dinner or eating them on their own, no matter what time of day.
Everyone also thinks they have the very best biscuit recipe ever. They’ll swear by their grandma’s perfect biscuit-making technique and keep the ingredients a secret to their grave. Yet, regardless of where they come from, put a plate of biscuits in front of any Fayettevillian, and they’ll be gone in a flash.
