For the most part, people in Ohio are pretty friendly. Of course, if they find out you’re supporting the Buckeye’s number one rival, the Michigan Wolverines, they won’t be quite so courteous.

According to Forbes, Columbus is one of the top 5 secret “foodie” cities in the country. This city tends to get ignored on a national level, but with restaurants like Cameron Mitchell’s The Pearl and the Refectory Restaurant & Bistro, it’s easy to see why foodies love it here.
7. You’ve Got Access To All Three Big C’s
It’s super easy to get around Ohio’s three biggest cities, especially if you’re starting in Columbus. Cincinnati is less than two hours southwest and Cleveland is only a little more than two hours away. This proximity makes traveling to one of these places the perfect day trip.
8. Politics Can Get A Bit Annoying Here
One of the most important swing states during presidential elections, Ohio tends to get tons of attention on campaign trails, especially in its capital, Columbus. At first, it’s kind of cool to see all the big names come through, but after months of hearing about only politics, most residents are begging for the elections to pass already.

One tasty treat that’s big in this area are cream puffs. However, the one’s that can be found in this city are rarely bite-sized. If it’s not bigger than your fist in Columbus, it doesn’t count.

When it comes to pups, this city loves them. People in Columbus have a tendency to bring them along everywhere they go, including places like restaurants and bars. Usually they’re friendly and well-socialized, but always ask the owner first before you touch their beloved pet.

Columbus is also a bike-friendly city, with a huge number of cyclists and plenty of bike lanes on the streets. Whenever you’re driving it’s extremely important to watch for bikers in your blind spots.

Over the years, the locals in Columbus have decided that the official name for the city they love is a bit too long. Feel free to just go with “C-bus” instead.

A parade filled with farcical and flamboyant costumes, you never know what you’ll see at the annual Columbus Doo Dah Parade. Starting in 1983, a few of the well-known groups that make the walk include the Dancing Fidel Castros and the Fishnet Mafia.

The Blue Jackets might not be off winning the Stanley Cup each year, but that’ doesn’t matter to the folks in Columbus. Regardless of what their record is, this city will always love supporting their local professional hockey team.

The Blue Jackets aren’t the only professional team in Columbus, they’ve also got the Columbus Crew Soccer Club. Known for their recognizable bright yellow jerseys, this team has the locals loving this sport more than most Americans.

Located on Spruce Street, the North Market is a giant indoor supermarket/shopping mall that’s filled with local merchants and artisans selling a mixture of foods and specialty goods. It’s a great place to go for a quick and easy snack or even your weekly grocery shopping.
18. Watch Out For Tow Away Zones
If you’re close to the Ohio State campus, be warned that the tow truck drivers in this area are notorious for being great at their jobs. When your car is suddenly missing, that’s probably where you should look first.

With close to one million visitors over 11 days, the city of Columbus gets filled with tons of extra tourists when the Ohio State Fair comes to town. Filled with plenty of deep-fried food, games, thrill rides, and people watching, this is one event that everyone has to check out at least once.
20. This Fourth Of July Fest Blows Away The Competition
With one of the largest fireworks displays in the country, it’s hard not to be overflowing with patriotism during the Fourth of July holiday celebrations in Columbus. This town is known for flaunting plenty of red, white, and blue on this special day.
21. There’s A Sweet Zoo Here
Located in the nearby Powell, Ohio, the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium is perfect for all ages. With more than 7,000 animals and over 800 species, you never know what you’ll see here.
22. Most Importantly, Always Drink Local
The craft beer movement is huge in Columbus, with new brewpubs popping up seemingly every week. A couple of the most popular ones are Barley’s Brewing Company, Elevator Brewery and Draught Haus, and the Columbus Brewing Company. However, the list doesn’t stop there. It’s probably best if you just go ahead and try them all.
