Columbusites don’t mind that it’s not a healthy dining option either, instead taking comfort in the familiar diner-like atmosphere and hot, greasy, delicious diner food.

2. Columbusites Are Indoor Football Fanatics

Columbusites know that football doesn’t need to be played outdoors—it's just as good, if not better, inside. This city is known for its love of this inside sport, especially when it comes to the professional Columbus Lions team. But indoor football isn’t just for professionals; the city harbors sports teams for people of all skill levels, including a youth football league. They get them started young around here.

3. And They're Super Snobs When It Comes To Fried Chicken And Okra

Many Columbusites will agree that almost anything is better fried, especially if it’s chicken or okra. Most can’t turn down a plate of tasty hot, breaded chicken, perfectly crispy on the outside and mouthwateringly juicy on the inside. While they love it from a restaurant, especially if it’s from the favored uptown spot, Minnies, they adore homemade fried chicken even more. You can’t forget the okra either, which is another fried Columbia favorite. It still counts as a vegetable serving even when coated in cornmeal and cooked in greasy oil, right?

Ask anyone in Columbus about mosquitos and they’re likely to go on an angry rant about how much they despise those blood-sucking little pests. The hot, humid and sometimes rainy climate of Columbus provides the perfect environment for mosquitoes. Of course, this doesn’t stop locals from getting out and enjoying the outdoors. Columbusites live for bug spray and citronella candles, and they’ve mastered the smacking death-blow used on any mosquitos that dare land on their arms.

Located right on the Chattahoochee River, Columbus is truly a river city, and that means Columbusites are true river rats. At any given time or day, you’ll can find loads of locals hanging out on the River Walk, a 15 mile linear park that runs along Chattahoochee River. Columbusites also know that one of the best ways to cool off during a hot Georgia day is by actually getting in the water, specifically with some thrilling river rafting. The city is home to the longest urban white water course in the world and it’s the best spot for an exhilarating, adrenaline-filled time.

6. Churches Are Filled Every Sunday—And Almost Every Other Day Of The Week

True to the typical Southern stereotype, most Columbusites head to church every Sunday without fault. The area is home to a huge Christian community, with about 200 Christian churches in the area and Southern Baptists making up over half the population. Yet many residents don’t limit their church activities to Sunday; locals tend to be thoroughly involved in the general Church community as well, like attending church suppers, bible studies, and pick-up basketball games. Simply put, most Columbusites are some serious church-loving people.

7. People In Columbus Pop Benadryl Like It’s Candy

Columbusites would be lost without their antihistamines, relying on the drugs when the pollen counts start to rise in the city. Locals are all too familiar with that dreaded yellow dust that drifts through the air. Plenty of residents become plagued with symptoms when spring rolls around, suffering from ailments like sneezing and itchy, red, watery eyes. Even those who don’t usually have allergy problems may find it difficult not to be affected by the crazy amount of pollen Columbus has, especially when the wind picks up and disperses the stuff absolutely everywhere. So, when you find an enormous stash of Benadryl in a Columbusites medicine cabinet, now you know why.

8. Columbus Locals All Have The Souls Of Artists

While it may be unknown to many, Columbus is an artsy town full of even artsier people. Locals love all things musical, artistic and theatrical. From the Springer Opera House and Columbus Symphony to the River Center for Performing Arts and Rankin Arts Center, there’s plenty to see and do for anyone, and locals sure take advantage of it. They love to be involved in all the artsy happenings that take place throughout the year, and those who don’t directly contribute to the art scene certainly still enjoy it, browsing art museums, spending nights at shows or just chilling out and listening to some great live music.

9. Columbusites Drink More Sweet Tea Than Water

Columbusites drink their tea by the bucket loads, but only on one very important condition–it must be sweet! It’s a Columbus staple and, if you’re ever looking for unsweetened tea in a restaurant, you’ll have to ask for it specifically. Of course, be prepared for some strange looks because people who drink unsweetened tea stick out like sore thumbs.

Columbus is full of its own Southern city belles—just not in the stereotypical sense. They may not don big hoop skirts, tight corsets or colorful parasols, but they make a definite statement with their eloquent social grace and distinctive mannerisms. In true southern belle fashion, Columbus women have are well-mannered, friendly and hospitable. Their demeanor is always charming, regardless of what may be going through their heads.
