Entrusting all your worldly possessions to a group of strangers who might throw them into a truck without an ounce of care is a frightening prospect. That’s why it’s important to do your research before you choose a reputable, trustworthy mover. Ensure you’re putting your move in capable hands by following these steps.
Step 1 – Ask
Ask friends, family, social media, or a local online forum if anyone has a recommendation for a mover. Search the internet for the top rated movers in your area. Make a list of the ones that fit your needs.
Step 2 – Screen
Do an internet search of each of the moving companies on your list. Check for:
- Their license
- Length of time they’ve been in business
- Better Business Bureau (bbb.org)
- American Moving & Storage Association (moving.org).
Be sure to check their online reviews and see if there are any serious complaints against them.
Step 3 – Call
Call your shortlist of movers armed with the following:
- Current address
- Destination address
- Services you want
- Size of your home (bedrooms and bathrooms, and square footage)
- Moving date
- Amount of furniture
Ask for:
- Their availability
- A quote (if possible, get a binding quote, which means the amount they charge you can’t exceed that number)
- What other fees they charge
- The payment methods they accept
- How long the move will take
- What their insurance covers
- What happens in case something is damaged or lost
- If they seem like the right fit, ask for an in-house estimate
Step 4 – Compare
Armed with the knowledge from your research, phone conversations, and in-house estimates, compare movers and choose the one that fits your needs. Kind in mind, the cheapest isn’t always the best. You’re better off paying a little more for a trustworthy, professional company that has been in business for a long time and has a history of customer satisfaction.
Step 5 – Confirm
Call your mover to confirm a time and date, the cost, and pay a deposit. Ask them what you need to have prepared for their arrival.
