Is it the humorously wholesome \u201cThe Munsters\u201d or the eccentric \u201cThe Addams Family\u201d? Chances are if you\u2019re of a certain age, or a classic TV buff, you have an opinion.<br \/>\nThese two shows aired simultaneously in the 1960s, and legions of fans still bicker about which show is best. Movoto Real Estate set about to add our own take on the debate by looking at one of the most important parts of the sitcoms\u2014their homes.<\/p>\n<h2>The Munsters<\/h2>\n<p>Airing for 70 episodes between 1964 and 1966, \u201cThe Munsters\u201d chronicled the lives of the titular Munster clan. As the name suggests, the black-and-white TV show took classic horrors such as Frankenstein\u2019s monster, a vampire, and werewolf, and turned them into a nuclear family, complete with the \u201cLeave it to Beaver\u201d vibe.<\/p>\n<h3>Munster Mansion<\/h3>\n<p>The real-life Munster mansion has a long history in television, even outside \u201cThe Munsters.\u201d Those with a quick eye and long memory might have last seen it in ABC\u2019s \u201cDesperate Housewives\u201d as 4351 Wisteria Lane. The set, however, underwent changes to make it less recognizable to TV-goers.<br \/>\nIn order to figure out the cost of the mansion we needed to know:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Its location<\/li>\n<li>Its size<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Fake Monsters, Fake Location<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Munster Mansion\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/movotoblog\/2012\/10\/Munsters+House.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" \/>Herman and company hung their hats at 1313 Mockingbird Lane in Mockingbird Heights, a fictional small town near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/real-estate\/homes-for-sale\/los-angeles.html\">Los Angeles<\/a>.<br \/>\nAfter scouring the Internet in the hope of finding a similar location, we were left stumped. No such location exists, at least near LA.<br \/>\nThis sad fact left us with a decision to make. The greater Los Angeles area is large. When it came time to place the Munster Mansion in Los Angeles, we picked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/real-estate\/homes-for-sale\/san-fernando.html\">San Fernando Valley<\/a> because of its wide-ranging demographics.<br \/>\nFrom here we needed to calculate the size of the mansion in order to locate similar homes and calculate a price.<\/p>\n<h3>Monster Square Footage<\/h3>\n<p>The Munster Mansion is large. We know this because of extreme fans Charles and Sandra McKee. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/real-estate\/homes-for-sale\/texas-area.html\">Texas<\/a> couple built a real-life replica of the Munster Mansion after painstakingly watching each episode.<br \/>\nAccording the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.munstermansion.com\/\">couple\u2019s website<\/a>, the mansion is 5,825 square feet and includes 4 bedrooms. In today\u2019s housing market, the Munster Mansion would be worth $1,170,825, or $157,547 in 1964 dollars.<br \/>\nIt seems Herman Munster made a lucrative living digging graves.<\/p>\n<h2>The Addams Family<\/h2>\n<p>The brainchild of cartoonist <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Addams\">Charles Addams<\/a>, the Addams Family appeared in a series of single-panel cartoons from 1938 until the author\u2019s death in 1988. Other adaptations of the Addams family include multiple television series, movies, video games, and a musical.<br \/>\nThe various incarnations of the concept follow the Addams brood, a group of wealthy eccentrics with a taste for the grisly, making the family the perfect group to battle the Munsters.<br \/>\nAiring in 1964, \u201cThe Addams Family\u201d ran for two seasons, wrapping up its run with 64 episodes.<\/p>\n<h3>Addams Mansion<\/h3>\n<p>Unlike the Munsters\u2019 Mansion, the Addams Family\u2019s mansion was based on a real home. In the pilot episode of the series, the exterior of the mansion was filmed on that aptly named Adams Boulevard in Los Angeles. After this a painting of the house was used for establishing shots.<br \/>\nAccording to <a href=\"http:\/\/21chesterplace.com\/\">James Myers<\/a>, an extreme Addams Family fan, the home used for exterior shots was located at 21 Chester Place in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/real-estate\/homes-for-sale\/ca\/los-angeles-county.html\">West Adams<\/a>, a district near downtown Los Angeles. One difference from the TV show is that the house at 21 Chester Place did not have a full third floor or tower. Instead, the show used an altered painting.<br \/>\nAccording to Myers, eventually the home found its way to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, which gave the land to Mount St. Mary College. Later the home was torn down as part of the Los Angeles Unified School District\u2019s plan to build a high school in the area.<br \/>\nAs with the Munster Mansion, we needed to know two things to figure the Addams Family Mansion\u2019s worth:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Its location<\/li>\n<li>Its size<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Sunshine for the Addams Family<\/h3>\n<p>Picking a location for the Addams Family Mansion left us with several options, all of which would have been valid, depending on which series we decided to focus on. To name a few, we could have chosen to locate the mansion based on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Charles Addams\u2019 hometown of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/property\/nj\/westfield.html\">Westfield, New Jersey<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The musical adoption location in New York City<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We chose to use the location of the home used for the establishing shots. This placed the home in the Los Angeles <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/real-estate\/homes-for-sale\/los-angeles.html\">90007<\/a> zip code in West Adams.<\/p>\n<h3>More Room for Mayhem<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Addams Family Mansion\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/movotoblog\/2012\/10\/Addams+Family+House.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" \/>Learning the size of the Addams Family Mansion proved to be a challenge. After hours of research, we were unable to locate the size of the home used in the TV show.<br \/>\nThis left us scratching our heads on how to evaluate the fictional home. Eventually, we buckled down and found the size of a similar home in the area.<br \/>\nOur search led us to the two-and-a-half-story <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dohenymansion.org\/\">Doheny Mansion<\/a> on the Mount St. Mary University campus. At 12,000 square feet,<br \/>\nthe Doheny Mansion is among the bedrocks of the institution\u2019s campus.<br \/>\nKnowing the size of the Doheny Mansion let us make an estimate of the size of the Addams Family Mansion.<br \/>\nWhat did we learn? The Addams Family\u2019s home would be 14,400 square feet, more than double the size of Herman and the gang\u2019s digs. In addition, it came at a price tag of $3,211,200, or $432,102 in 1964 dollars.<br \/>\nSo if you\u2019re planning a move and don\u2019t mind a few extra monsters in your closet or under the bed, consider the Munster Mansion or Addams Family Mansion.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"color: #000;background-color: #000;height: 3px\" \/>\n<em>The Movoto blog is a service of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\">Movoto Real Estate<\/a>.
