The association successfully led a call to amend the National Association of Realtors (NAR) Code of Ethics to include protection for sexual orientation.<br \/>\nThe change in NAR\u2019s Code of Ethics prevented discrimination against colleagues or consumers based on sexual orientation.<br \/>\nJeff Berger, a soft-spoken Realtor from Boca Raton and founder of NAGLREP, called this his organization\u2019s \u201cgreatest victory.\u201d<br \/>\nThis month marks the annual LGBT Pride Month. In celebration of the month-long event, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\">Movoto Real Estate<\/a> spoke with prominent members of NAGLREP about the organization\u2019s past and future. As supporters of fair-housing initiatives, we believe NAGLREP and similar organizations have achieved much in promoting the housing market in the LGBT community.<\/p>\n<h2>National Association of Gay &amp; Lesbian Real Estate Professionals<\/h2>\n<p><div style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Jeff Berger\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/movotoblog\/2012\/06\/images\/Jeff+Berger.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"252\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jeff Berger founded NAGLREP in 2007. He modeled it on other successful groups such as The National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals.<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nNAGLREP was founded in 2007 with two missions: To act as a trade association for gay and gay-friendly Realtors and to work on the nation\u2019s fair-housing laws. Since its inception, it has worked closely with the NAR\u2019s Diversity Committee.<br \/>\n\u201cThe long-term perspective from NAGLREP is to begin looking at a rewrite of the nation\u2019s housing laws,\u201d Todd Shipman, a member and past president of the association, told Movoto in a phone interview.<br \/>\nWhile the amount of fair-housing issues in the country are extensive, some are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Taxes;<\/li>\n<li>Ownership concerns; and<\/li>\n<li>State-level discrimination.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more information, the Human Rights Campaign compiled a guide for LGBT couples. Though not exhaustive, it is an excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/entry\/housing-for-lgbt-people-what-you-need-to-know-about-property-ownership-and\">resource<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Changing the Game<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Joe Schutt\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/movotoblog\/2012\/06\/images\/nar-diversity-committee-meeting.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><br \/>\nNAGLREP\u2019s most prominent success was the amendment to NAR\u2019s Code of Ethics. Both Berger and Shipman believed the passage of the amendment will act as an example for the future legislation. We generally agree.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s no secret that NAR is a large trade association. From the association\u2019s own lips, it markets itself as America&#8217;s largest trade association with more than 1 million members.<br \/>\nIn other words, when lawmakers take up the equal rights legislation in the future, they will look at NAR as an example of a large group that has already banned discrimination based on sexual orientation.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s our opinion that this will set a good precedent that the largest trade organization in the world has voted to not allow discrimination based on sexual orientation,\u201d Berger said.<\/p>\n<h2>Inclusive Means Everyone<\/h2>\n<p>NAGLREP\u2019s future is revisiting its past. Recently, the association began working toward another amendment to NAR\u2019s Code of Ethics. This time around NAGLREP is tackling gender identity, or a person\u2019s sense of his or her gender.<br \/>\nWhen NAGLREP worked to help pass the first amendment in 2010, gender identity wasn\u2019t included, though not purposefully.<br \/>\n\u201c(The amendment) was written and passed, and we all assumed that sexual orientation included gender intently, but it just got overlooked,\u201d Shipman said.<br \/>\nOne reason NAGLREP started to re-examine the issue was because the U.S. Department of Housing and Development has begun looking at the issue.<br \/>\nFor example, in January HUD put forward new regulations to make sure its housing program is open to everyone regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.<br \/>\n\u201cThey are trying to bring it full circle, so we brought this issue back to the Diversity Committee,\u201d Shipman said.<br \/>\nLast month, NAR\u2019s Diversity Committee took up the issue of gender identity and voted to pass it along to the association\u2019s Professional Standards Committee, essentially the group that works through writing the amendment.<br \/>\nIf the amendment makes it out of the Professional Standards Committee, and we truly hope it does, it would be up for a vote at NAR\u2019s annual convention in November.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s going to take a little bit of work,\u201d Shipman said, adding he believed the amendment has \u201cpretty good support.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Why is this Necessary?<\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a moment and put aside the social aspect of fair housing for the LGBT community. It\u2019s obvious inequality exists and needs to be dealt with.<br \/>\nNAGLREP couched its initial amendment in terms of consumer service, and plans do the same with the upcoming gender identity amendment. At its core, NAR is consumer based. This includes the LGBT community.<br \/>\n\u201cWe have crafted this Code of Ethics that we abide by and it\u2019s about consumer protection and houses for everybody,\u201d Shipman said. \u201cYou can\u2019t discriminate against any group.\u201d<br \/>\nWe can look at it another way as well. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2011\/09\/27\/140859242\/census-131-729-gay-couples-report-theyre-married\">According to the 2010 Census<\/a>, there were 131,729 same-sex married couple households and 514,735 same-sex unmarried partner households in the United States. Do you think all these couples are living in apartments?
