On Long Island<\/a>, 16th birthday parties are often capable of having their own episode of MTV\u2019s \u201cSuper Sweet 16\u201d due to their extravagant nature. Viewed as a coming-of-age celebration for these lucky teens, a lot of the Long Island families will go all out during this party.<\/p>\n

2. Fake Italian Ice<\/h2>\n

There\u2019s no reason to fly to California<\/a> to get some time on the surfboard when there are already great waves off the coast of Long Island. They might not be as huge and the season might be shorter, but they\u2019ll get the job done.<\/p>\n

Every Long Islander has to cringe a little when they hear an out-of-towner mention how good that slice they had in Manhattan was. After all, Long Islanders know that the best pizza is in their own neighborhood. It tastes better, it\u2019s quicker without the tourists, and it\u2019s usually cheaper.<\/p>\n

The people of Long Island live a much more suburban lifestyle than something as hectic as what you might find in a busy city, meaning the people here are nice and relatively laid back.<\/p>\n

Forget about Waffle House and Denny\u2019s. Long Island is home to a unique diner on seemingly every corner, all with excellent food that\u2019s typically served all hours of the day. Subpar diners just don\u2019t cut it around here.<\/p>\n

10. Lacrosse Haters<\/h2>\n

Texas<\/a> has its football, Indiana<\/a> has its basketball, Long Island has its lacrosse. Nearly every kid here seems to grow up playing the sport and with how awesome it is, it\u2019s a surprise the rest of the country hasn\u2019t caught on yet.<\/p>\n

Unless a Long Islander has a reason to go to New York City, they really tend to avoid it. It\u2019s just not worth all the hassle to get there and back when they\u2019ve got everything they need in their own area.<\/p>\n

Despite how frequently the train comes, it always feels like you barely miss it. Every Long Islander knows that the dreaded sound of the train pulling away means that your plans will be set back by 15 minutes or so.<\/p>\n

Fighting for food with the birds on Long Island has basically become a sport over the past few decades. As tourism increased and the birds realized that every visitor was basically a walking vending machine, they seemed to gain a sense of confidence granting them the ability to steal sandwiches and ice cream cones alike. Every Long Islander has their own tricks when it comes to keeping their food safe.<\/p>\n

Sure, Long Island has a ton of Mets fans, but it\u2019s also got a ton of Yankees fans. There are lots of Jets fans here, but there\u2019s also a ton of people rooting for the Giants. With so many great sports teams in the city, you never really know who someone is cheering for. It\u2019s always safer not to just assume things.<\/p>\n

Home to the most famous horror house in the country, the unexplained on Long Island isn\u2019t restricted to just Amityville<\/a>. Ghost stories are popular in nearly every town along this stretch of land, but most Long Islanders know that if they don\u2019t bother these ghouls that they won\u2019t get bothered in return.<\/p>\n

17. People That Don\u2019t Sing Along To Piano Man<\/h2>\n

In case you haven\u2019t heard already, Billy Joel is a Long Islander through and through. If a Long Islander is around and Piano Man comes on, expect them to turn it up and belt it out, regardless of their singing abilities.<\/p>\n

18. Borough Confusion<\/h2>\n

The boroughs of New York consist of Manhattan, Brooklyn<\/a>, Queens<\/a>, the Bronx<\/a>, and Staten Island<\/a>\u2014not Long Island. While Brooklyn and Queens are technically on Long Island, the locals don\u2019t include them leaving the two counties of Nassau and Suffolk to make up what\u2019s considered \u201cLong Island.\u201d It\u2019s basically an island in the shape of a peninsula stretching out from New York City, but it\u2019s not actually part of the city.<\/p>\n

Nothing can be more crushing on Long Island than when boat or beach plans have to be canceled due to bad weather. Thankfully, the summer months around these parts get plenty of sunshine.<\/p>\n

While Long Island traffic is nowhere near as chaotic as the traffic in the city, it can still get pretty hairy at times. Most Long Islanders have little secret routes they take to avoid the congestion during rush hour.<\/p>\n

21. Explaining To Outsiders Why Long Island Is Better Than \u201cThe City\u201d<\/h2>\n

Its cleaner, the food is better, the people are nicer, it\u2019s not so chaotic, there are easily accessible beaches, and if you really want the Big Apple, it\u2019s there. The list goes on, but most Long Islanders would probably prefer I stopped there so that too many tourists don\u2019t catch on to what they\u2019re missing out on.
