A special blend of herbs and spices perfect for seasoning the cuisine of Maryland<\/a>, Old Bay is one of those flavorings that can make anything taste better. It\u2019s said that it was originally introduced as a means of causing crab-eating bar patrons to crave more drinks but has since become a staple of every Maryland kitchen.<\/p>\n

The official team sport in Maryland, people around this state love lacrosse. For some strange reason, the rest of the nation isn\u2019t quite so crazy about this sport yet. That doesn\u2019t matter to Marylanders, they won\u2019t put up with much trash talk when it comes to this game.<\/p>\n

A worn-out pet name in most states, in Maryland the term \u201chon\u201d refers to a fashion trend that took place between the \u201950s and \u201970s in which women wore brightly colored clothing and styled their hair to resemble beehives, hence the \u201chon.\u201d It\u2019s short for \u201choney\u201d and gets used all the time in Maryland. It\u2019s not too surprising that this era is still commemorated every year with Baltimore\u2019s annual HonFest.<\/p>\n

Marylanders have a slight addiction to this place called Ledo\u2019s Pizza. One of the differences that makes these pies unique is that they\u2019re square. Don\u2019t knock it until you try it.<\/p>\n

Technically an oriole is a small blackbird commonly found in Maryland area, however the Orioles around here that people really care about are a professional baseball team. The love for this team can easily be seen around the state by everyone sporting their orange, black, and white colors.<\/p>\n

Controversy has surrounded the Ravens for years, especially with the whole Ray Rice debacle last season. Despite these struggles, the love the team gets from their fans never wavers. The people in this state know that the actions of one player aren\u2019t representative of the entire organization.<\/p>\n

The terrapin is not your typical turtle. It\u2019s a unique species of this slowly moving, shelled animal and it\u2019s the only type of turtle that can live in brackish water. They\u2019re easily recognizable thanks to the angular rings on their shells and their prominence in the state led to their namesake being used as the nickname for athletic squads from the University of Maryland.<\/p>\n

Similar to shaved ice and snow cones, snowballs also consist of flavored shaved ice, however it\u2019s so thinly shaved that it tends to have a more delicate, creamy mouth-feel. It\u2019s also often topped with a dollop of marshmallow cream in case it\u2019s not sweet enough already.<\/p>\n

A state that\u2019s home to enormous bridges like the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, residents in Maryland get used to crossing large spans of water on roadways. Tiny bridges found elsewhere can\u2019t even be put in the same category as the awesome engineering marvels found here.<\/p>\n

15. Dealing With Their Feelings Towards The Colts<\/h2>\n

The team that infamously packed up their equipment and left Baltimore for Indianapolis<\/a>, old-school Maryland fans aren\u2019t quite sure how they feel about this team. Hatred is such a strong word, but after all, the Colts did abandon their city. It\u2019s a bitter subject to bring up.<\/p>\n

16. A Long Drive To The Beach<\/h2>\n

Why spend hours in the car traveling to a tropical beach when and North Beach are so close? The beaches in Maryland are some of the most beautiful around and they don\u2019t have nearly the same crowds that you\u2019ll find elsewhere.<\/p>\n

While both teams are part of the armed forces, Marylanders will always side with the Navy. Playing their games in Annapolis<\/a> at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, the locals will pick the Midshipmen over the Army Black Knights any day.<\/p>\n

One state that\u2019s plagued by overcrowded roadways, driving in Maryland can seem unbearable from time to time. If you\u2019re headed somewhere during one of the busier times on the streets, it\u2019s probably smart to budget at least twice the time to get there<\/p>\n

For the last time, Baltimore is not the capital of Maryland. It\u2019s Annapolis. Just because Baltimore is bigger and better known doesn\u2019t change the official facts. Outsiders need to stop confusing the two already.<\/p>\n

While Maryland is an awesome place to call home, the big cities here don\u2019t get the same huge tourism numbers like nearby Washington DC<\/a>, New York City, or Philadelphia<\/a>. That\u2019s just fine with the locals though.
\nWhile Marylanders are perfectly friendly people, they aren\u2019t complaining that out-of-towners tend to plan their vacations elsewhere. It just leaves more awesome seafood for the people that call the Old Line State home.
