Having recently visualized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/blog\/opinions\/crime-maps-over-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nationwide crime trends over time as a map<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Movoto Real Estate<\/a> Blog decided to look into how the earnings of men and women have progressed over a 10-year span.<br \/>\nWe consulted the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/acs\/www\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Census&#8217; American Community Survey<\/a>, crunched some numbers, and created the all-too-telling graphic you can see above, as well as the others you&#8217;ll see throughout this article.<br \/>\nCurious how we determined these results? You can scroll to the end of this article and read about our methodology. In the meantime, we\u2019ll take a look at some visible trends and patterns and discuss what these maps are really saying.<\/p>\n<h2>First, The Good News<\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s start by saying that there was no year or state where women made equal earnings (or more earnings) compared to men during the range of our survey.<br \/>\nHowever, there is a little bit of good news: Looking at the national average for the difference between men\u2019s and women\u2019s earnings, the gap has been slowly closing.<br \/>\nIn 2004, the difference according to the American Community Survey was nearly 25 percent, with women making a quarter less than men. Since then, the difference has decreased by about half a percent every few years, and in 2013 women\u2019s wages were about 21.9 percent less than men\u2019s overall.<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s still quite a gap and not exactly something to celebrate, but the trend is towards earning equality, and that, at least, is a good sign. Unfortunately, this trend did not extend to every state in the country.<\/p>\n<h2>Where The Gap Is Growing<\/h2>\n<p>It might seem absurd to think that the gap between earnings of men and women could still be growing in some places in this day and age, but, as it turns out, that\u2019s still occurring in a few states.<br \/>\nIn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/la\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Louisiana<\/a>, the difference has consistently been wide, with women making at least 30 percent less every single year of our survey. What\u2019s more is that in 2004 women there were making just over 32 percent less, but in 2013 that difference had grown to over 34 percent.<br \/>\nIn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/wy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wyoming<\/a>, women made nearly 30 percent less than men in 2004. As extreme as that number is, in 2012 women made almost 36 percent less than men. That difference decreased slightly the next year, but it was still worse than it had been only 10 years earlier.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/wv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">West Virginia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/sd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Dakota<\/a> also had a consistently large gap between the earnings of men and women.<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/sites\/2\/2015\/02\/income-2013.png\" alt=\"These Surprising Maps Show How Income Inequality Between Men And Women Has Changed Over The Last Decade\" style=\"width:969px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"centered\">\n<h2>States On Their Way<\/h2>\n<p>While many states wavered between a shrinking and growing earnings gap, some states are definitely headed in the right direction. For example, women in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/ga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Georgia<\/a> made 23 percent less than men in 2004, but in 2013 that gap had closed to just around 18 percent.<br \/>\nGeorgia wasn\u2019t the only example. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/fl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Florida<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Delaware<\/a> also saw a significant decrease in the earnings gap, with Delaware most notably closing a 24 percent difference to a 17.6 percent difference in just 10 years. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/wi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wisconsin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/mi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michigan<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/nh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Hampshire<\/a> all saw similar decreases.<br \/>\nPossibly the most significant change was seen in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/ny\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York<\/a>, where women made well over 20 percent less than men in 2004. That gap progressively shrank each year of our survey, so that, in 2013, the difference was only around 14 percent.<\/p>\n<h2>The Ups And Downs<\/h2>\n<p>We should also note that there were a few states that stayed unchanged or wavered a lot over the time period we looked at. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California<\/a>, for example, had a consistently small gap in earnings, whereas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Idaho<\/a> was consistently high.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/ak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alaska<\/a>, on the other hand, fluctuated betweena large and small difference, as did <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/ar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arkansas<\/a> and Montana. In fact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/mt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Montana<\/a> went from large gap to small gap every few years, jumping between over 30 percent and under 25 percent, often in only a one-year span.<br \/>\nIt just goes to show that not every earnings trend here is consistent.<\/p>\n<h2>The Difference Is Notable<\/h2>\n<p>Even with the gap between the earnings of men and women shrinking steadily in many states\u2014and nationally\u2014the difference is still undeniable. Whatever the reason for this wage discrepancy, it\u2019s one that\u2019s worth examining and taking note of, no matter your gender or where you call home.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/sites\/2\/2015\/02\/men-women-income-table-969.png\" alt=\"These Surprising Maps Show How Income Inequality Between Men And Women Has Changed Over The Last Decade\" style=\"width:969px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"centered\">\n<h2>How We Created These Maps<\/h2>\n<p>To create this map, we first looked to the U.S. Census\u2019 American Community Survey for data. In particular, we looked at the earnings for men and women each year from 2004 to 2013. Then, we found the percentage difference between men and women\u2019s earnings each year.
