C\u2019mon, we\u2019ve seen the movies.<br \/>\nBut what about those places that&#8217;re slightly larger? Are they just as caring, you ask? At the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Movoto Real Estate<\/a> Blog, the same questioning has been plaguing us, so we decided to put an end to our sleepless nights (and yours too), and create a list of the 10 most caring small cities in the U.S.<br \/>\nHere they are, starting with our winner and all around most caring place, Petaluma, CA:<br \/>\n1. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/petaluma-ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City of Petaluma, CA<\/a><br \/>\n2. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/marietta-ga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City of Marietta, GA<\/a><br \/>\n3. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/chapel-hill-nc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Town of Chapel Hill, NC<\/a><br \/>\n4. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/georgetown-tx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City of Georgetown, TX<\/a><br \/>\n5. City of Charleston, WV<br \/>\n6. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/hempstead-ny\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Village of Hempstead, NY<\/a><br \/>\n7. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/harrisonburg-va\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City of Harrisonburg, VA<\/a><br \/>\n8. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/bradenton-fl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City of Bradenton, FL<\/a><br \/>\n9. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/oak-park-il\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City of Oak Park, IL<\/a><br \/>\n10. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/san-rafael-ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City of San Rafael, CA<\/a><br \/>\nInterestingly, when we checked out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/blog\/top-ten\/most-caring-cities-in-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most caring<\/a> bigger cities in the U.S., nearly all of them could be found in the South. Now don\u2019t freak out, but if you haven\u2019t noticed already this list of smaller cities includes not just California (twice), but Florida, Illinois, and even New York.<br \/>\nTo find out just how we came up with this list, keep reading. Then we\u2019ll go over what makes the people in each of these places so caring. Yes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/ga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Georgia<\/a>, even the Yankees.<\/p>\n<h2>Our Methodology<\/h2>\n<p>Just like our other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/blog\/kind-of-a-big-deal-lists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Big Deal Lists<\/a>, we wanted to rely on facts and figures rather than our own, perhaps slightly biased opinions (this author is from the South, y\u2019all). So we started by making a list of all the small cities in the U.S. with populations between 50,000 and 60,000, which gave us 140 places total.<br \/>\nWe then used sources like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/2010census\/data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2010 U.S. Census<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/about-us\/cjis\/ucr\/crime-in-the-u.s\/2012\/crime-in-the-u.s.-2012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2012 FBI Uniform Crime Report<\/a>, and business listings to look at each place in terms of the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Student-counselor ratio<\/li>\n<li>Crimes per 100,000 people (the lower the better)<\/li>\n<li>Pet shelters and rescue per capita<\/li>\n<li>Community services per capita<\/li>\n<li>Mental health counselors and therapists per capita<\/li>\n<li>Percent of workers who carpool (caring for the environment)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From there, we ranked each place with scores from one to 140, where the lowest scores were the most caring places. We then averaged each city\u2019s rankings into one overall Big Deal Score, where again, the lowest score went to our most caring place.<br \/>\nIf you want to see where your small city might have ranked, feel free to hop down to the bottom of this post to see the top 50 most caring small cities. If you don\u2019t see yours there, it may be that it doesn\u2019t fall into the size requirements. Or maybe you\u2019re just jerks, who knows?<br \/>\nTo hear more about the non-jerkiest small cities (it\u2019s a word\u2026now), keep on reading. We\u2019ll take a closer look at our top 10, starting with our most caring city, Petaluma.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Petaluma, CA<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/movotoblog\/2014\/10\/most-caring-small-cities\/images\/1.jpg\" alt=\"Most Caring Small Cities In America\" style=\"width:600px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\">Source: Flickr user Jennifer Longaway<\/div>\n<p>We&#8217;re not making this up: many scenes from the movie \u201cPleasantville\u201d were actually filmed in Petaluma, specifically at the intersection of Petaluma Blvd. and Western Avenue.<br \/>\nIt doesn\u2019t just look like a city so caring that it must be fictional either, it actually is. It\u2019s almost too good to be true. Just think about this: out of 140 cities in the U.S., Petaluma had the 12th lowest number of crimes. It also had the sixth highest number of counselors and mental health professionals per capita, and was among the top 30 for its percentage of residents who carpool.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s really no wonder this Sonoma-Marin Fair-hosting, Butter and Egg Days Parade-celebrating, Little League World Series-playing small city made the top of our list.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Marietta, GA<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/movotoblog\/2014\/10\/most-caring-small-cities\/images\/2.jpg\" alt=\"Most Caring Small Cities In America\" style=\"width:600px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\">Source: Flickr user Public Information Office<\/div>\n<p>There must be something in the water in this part of the country, because not only did <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/atlanta-ga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Atlanta<\/a> come in as our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/blog\/top-ten\/most-caring-cities-in-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most caring<\/a> larger city in the U.S., but now one of its suburbs comes in as the second most caring small city. What is it, Georgia? Sweet tea?<br \/>\nDespite the fact that Marietta didn\u2019t exactly have the best track record in crime (it ranked 126th here), it more than made up for this by scoring well in all of our other categories. With places like Good Mews Animal Foundation and Our Pal\u2019s Place, just to name a couple, Marietta had the fourth most animal shelters per capita.<br \/>\nIt wasn\u2019t just about Fido here. Residents care for one another, with the fifth most counselors and mental health professionals per capita, and they even cared for the environment\u201415.24 percent of them carpooled regularly.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Chapel Hill, NC<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/movotoblog\/2014\/10\/most-caring-small-cities\/images\/3.jpg\" alt=\"Most Caring Small Cities In America\" style=\"width:600px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\">Source: Flickr user US Army John F Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School\u2019s Photostream<\/div>\n<p>It seems fitting that Chapel Hill\u2019s motto is \u201cThe Southern Part of Heaven.\u201d After all, heaven\u2019s got to be filled with some pretty caring people, don\u2019t you think?<br \/>\nThe residents in Chapel Hill are no different\u2014with the 11th most community services per capita, they clearly value volunteering. \u00a0With the 15th lowest student-counselor ratio in schools, they clearly value their kids (the ratio was only 13 to one), and best of all, with the most counselors and mental health professionals per capita, they clearly value their adults as well.<br \/>\nPlus, this place has Rise Biscuits &amp; Donuts. It really is heaven.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Georgetown, TX<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/movotoblog\/2014\/10\/most-caring-small-cities\/images\/4.jpg\" alt=\"Most Caring Small Cities In America\" style=\"width:600px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\">Source: Flickr user Anne Worner<\/div>\n<p>Now this author may be a little biased and all, coming from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/austin-tx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Austin<\/a>, but Georgetown is awesome and is filled with absolute saints. All of them. Okay, yeah, a little biased.<br \/>\nBut the numbers don\u2019t lie: Georgetown cares about its human residents, with some of the most community services per capita and the 13th lowest student to counselor ratio in the nation. It also cared for its four-legged people, considering it had the 10th most animal shelters per capita.<br \/>\nPlus it\u2019s where that John Travolta movie \u201cMichael\u201d was filmed, and if we trust all things that movies say (which, of course we do), angels must live there.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Charleston, WV<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/movotoblog\/2014\/10\/most-caring-small-cities\/images\/5.jpg\" alt=\"Most Caring Small Cities In America\" style=\"width:600px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\">Source: Flickr user US Department of Education\u2019s photostream<\/div>\n<p>Fun fact: Booker T. Washington, celebrated writer, educator, civil rights leader, and all around caring dude, once lived in Charleston. Now, this doesn\u2019t have anything to do with our analysis, but it\u2019s just a taste of the type of kind-hearted folks you\u2019ll find here.<br \/>\nThese days, said kind-hearted folks seem to spend a lot of their time serving the community, as this city had the eighth most community services per capita. And it seems to be paying off\u2014it also had the eighth fewest crimes per 100,000 people.<\/p>\n<h2>6. Hempstead, NY<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/movotoblog\/2014\/10\/most-caring-small-cities\/images\/6.jpg\" alt=\"Most Caring Small Cities In America\" style=\"width:600px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\">Source: Flickr user Adam Fagen<\/div>\n<p>Ah, Hempstead: The previous residence of such great men as Walt Whitman, Christopher Morley, and, of course, Method Man. Not saying these guys were necessarily philanthropists or anything; it\u2019s just a cool fact.<br \/>\nThese days, though, Hempstead does seem to be populated with some very caring people. Out of the 140 places we looked at, it had the 20th lowest student-counselor ratio in schools (a good thing, too, because it\u2019s something of a college town), and it had the 31st most community services (things like homeless shelters, soup kitchens, etc.) per capita.<br \/>\nAs far as the environment goes, it doesn\u2019t get much friendlier than this: 14.05 percent of residents carpooled on the regular.<\/p>\n<h2>7. Harrisonburg, VA<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/movotoblog\/2014\/10\/most-caring-small-cities\/images\/7.jpg\" alt=\"Most Caring Small Cities In America\" style=\"width:600px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\">Source: Flickr user Chesapeakeclimate<\/div>\n<p>This city, appropriately nicknamed \u201cThe Friendly City,\u201d came in toward the top of our list for a number of reasons.<br \/>\nFirst of all, with a student-counselor ratio of just 12 to one, it had one of the lowest in the country. To put that into perspective, most places hover around 20 to 1, and many (especially in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California<\/a>) have even more.<br \/>\nHarrisonburg residents also seem to really love their pets, seeing as though this city is home to some of the most animal shelters per capita.<\/p>\n<h2>8. Bradenton, FL<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/movotoblog\/2014\/10\/most-caring-small-cities\/images\/8.jpg\" alt=\"Most Caring Small Cities In America\" style=\"width:600px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\">Source: Flickr user Episcopal Diocese of Southwest Florida\u2019s photostream<\/div>\n<p>Bradenton may not exactly have the lowest crime rate (it ranked 120th here), but that certainly doesn\u2019t mean residents don\u2019t care about one another\u2014or their pets for that matter. This city had the sixth most animal shelters per capita\u2014places like Honor Animal Rescue and the Bishop Animal Shelter SPCA.<br \/>\nThis city also had the sixth most community services per capita, including homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and services for those in need. And speaking of services for those in need, Bradenton just keeps \u2018em coming: it had the 17th most counselors and mental health professionals per capita.<\/p>\n<h2>9. Oak Park, IL<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/movotoblog\/2014\/10\/most-caring-small-cities\/images\/9.jpg\" alt=\"Most Caring Small Cities In America\" style=\"width:600px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\">Source: Flickr user Joshua\/Yoon Hernandez<\/div>\n<p>Oak Park, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/il\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Illinois<\/a> may be just a quick ride away from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/chicago-il\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chicago<\/a>, but as far as things like safety, community services, and general human decency go, they are worlds apart.<br \/>\nOut of all of the places we looked at, Oak Park had the lowest number of crimes per 100,000 residents: just 1,084. To put that into perspective, its larger neighbor, Chicago, had 5,175.<br \/>\nIn addition to not mugging, murdering, or otherwise messing with each other, residents in Oak Park show they care by way of community services and providing counseling when its needed. It ranked ninth and 10th in these categories, respectively.<\/p>\n<h2>10. San Rafael, CA<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/movotoblog\/2014\/10\/most-caring-small-cities\/images\/10.jpg\" alt=\"Most Caring Small Cities In America\" style=\"width:600px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\">Source: City of San Rafael<\/div>\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever been to San Rafael or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movoto.com\/marin-county-ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marin County<\/a> in general, just a walk around the block\u2014any block really\u2014and you\u2019ll get the feeling that these people really care about each other. And their dogs, too, of course.<br \/>\nOut of all the places we looked at, San Rafael had the most community services per capita\u2014things like homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and other help for those in need. It also had the second most counselors and mental health professionals per capita.<br \/>\nThey also cared for their four-legged friends who need a home\u2014San Rafael had the 14th most animal shelters per capita.<\/p>\n<h2>Your Very Own Pleasantville<\/h2>\n<p>As anyone who has ever seen an episode of &#8220;Leave it to Beaver&#8221; or a movie taking place in the &#8217;50s knows, itty bitty towns in America are pretty much the equivalent to real life Pleasantvilles, just lacking the unicorns and free candy (okay, I haven\u2019t seen the movie).<br \/>\nClearly, though, these tiny cities aren\u2019t the only places filled with caring folks\u2014these 10 places prove that.<br \/>\nIf you\u2019re looking to move to your very own Pleasantville, get in touch.
