Minnesota has the 21st largest population out of all the states in the country, and, interestingly, almost 60 percent of its residents live within the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area, commonly known as the Twin Cities. But what are these cities like for crime and safety? Read on to find out:<\/p>\n

1. Plymouth<\/h2>\n

\nThe safest city in Minnesota is actually a suburb of the aforementioned Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area. Plymouth<\/a> still has city rights though, and it\u2019s the seventh largest city in the state, home to around 70,500 people. Money magazine voted this the best place to live in America in 2008. The crime index is 1,765 and that\u2019s 28 percent lower than the state average.<\/p>\n

2. Woodbury<\/h2>\n

\nWoodbury<\/a> is the 10th largest city in the state, and it\u2019s ranked the second safest city in Minnesota out of the state\u2019s 10 largest cities. The crime index here is 2,111, and that\u2019s 14 percent down on the state average. Woodbury is just east of St. Paul.<\/p>\n

3. Rochester<\/h2>\n

\nRochester<\/a> is not only the third safest city in Minnesota, it is the third largest too. Home to around 107,000 people, Rochester is southeast of Minneapolis and its largest employer is the Mayo Clinic. The crime index for Rochester is 2,315; 5 percent lower than the state average.<\/p>\n

4. Eagan<\/h2>\n

\nOnce a small, rural Irish farming community, Eagan<\/a> is today the ninth largest city in Minnesota. It is the fourth safest place to live in Minnesota out of the 10 largest cities in the state, with a crime index of 2,389, which puts it 2 percent lower than the state average.<\/p>\n

5. Bloomington<\/h2>\n

\nBloomington<\/a> is a suburb of Minneapolis, set just 10 miles south of downtown. Even so, it\u2019s the fifth largest city in the state, home to around 86,000 people. Established as a housing boom suburb of the post-World War 2 era this is the fifth safest city in Minnesota and has a crime index of 3,905 \u2013 58 percent higher than the state average.<\/p>\n

6. Brooklyn Park<\/h2>\n

\nBrooklyn Park<\/a> is a bedroom community of Minneapolis and St. Paul, and with its population around 77,000 people it is the sixth largest city in Minnesota. Brooklyn Park is safer than four other large Minnesotan cities, ranked sixth on our list with a crime index of 3,999 \u2013 62 percent higher than the state average.<\/p>\n

7. St. Cloud<\/h2>\n

\nSt. Cloud<\/a> is the eighth largest city, and the seventh safest city in Minnesota. The crime index here is 4,148, and that\u2019s 68 percent up from the state average. St. Cloud is 65 miles northwest of the Twin Cities and has a population around 65,900.<\/p>\n

8. St. Paul<\/h2>\n

\nSaint Paul<\/a> is the capital of Minnesota, and the second largest city in the state. With a population around 290,000 crime levels are higher than many smaller cities. St. Paul\u2019s crime index is actually 95 percent higher than the state average, at 4,803, but with Minneapolis on the doorstep this is a hip and happening place to live.<\/p>\n

9. Duluth<\/h2>\n

Ranked the ninth safest large city in Minnesota, Duluth has a crime index that is 114 percent up from the state average, at 5,282. 10. Minneapolis<\/h2>\n
