If you’re heading to Akron for a visit or to check out the amenities for your human family, you’ll also want to look into the dog parks in the area for your furry companion. These five dog parks top the list for their amenities and layouts that make them ideal for pets of all sizes. Stop by one and spend a day in the sand and sun, or use another for a quick romp through nature.
Portage Lakes State Park

Although not a park specific to dogs, the Portage Lakes State Park is a doggie-friendly zone that you and your family may enjoy. Three sides of the park are fenced in, so dogs that like to run off should be kept on a leash. A lake is part of this park, giving pets a place to cool off or grab a drink; they can swim or play on the sandy beach, too.
Trash cans are plentiful around the park, as are wooded areas, benches, and available restrooms for your pets’ human companions. The area nearest the water is a sandy beach where you can lounge or set up camp for the day. In total, the three-sided area for dogs is approximately an acre in size.

Akron Dog Park is a non-profit park that is in the Akron metro area. It is run by Better Akron Recreation for Canines, or BARC, which maintains the fenced-in space. Dogs are allowed to run off-leash with others in the park.
Since the park opened in 2004, the organization has continued to care for the grass-and-gravel park. There are many amenities, some of which include secure double-gated entry gates, bench seating and shaded areas, doggie drinking stations (these are seasonal), and agility and doggie play equipment.
The park is open every day of the year from dawn until dusk, so you can stop by any time.

Bow Wow Beach Park
Would your pooch rather hit the waves than play on the grass? That’s a total possibility at Bow Wow Beach Club. The dog park is based in Stow, just minutes from downtown Akron. The park is not staffed during opening hours, so keep that in mind as your pet runs and swims in the 7.5-acre fenced play area. The 3-acre lake and dog washing stations are ideal for a day at the beach, and separate areas for smaller dogs keep them safe and away from pushier pups.
The park is closed on Thursday mornings until 11:00 a.m. during the open season; this is when the staff maintains and cleans the facility. The park is open between mid-March and December 1 every year from 8:00 a.m. until dark.

Mugrage Park

A wooded park with a pond on the side of the park provided for larger dogs, Mugrage park is worth a try for pets who love a good day outdoors. There is a separated area for pets under 30 pounds.
Well-socialized dogs can enjoy playing with others while their owners sit nearby, and trails through trees help keep pets occupied. The park focuses on providing a natural setting; if you want to get close to nature while your pet gets to socialize, this is the park for you. The entire park spans six acres, so your fuzzy friend should finish the day and be tuckered out for a drive home.

Tails and Trail Dog Park
While you’re on your way into the city or heading out, stop for a bit at the Tails n’ Trail Dog Park. Located nearby in Aurora, Ohio, the dog park, built in 2007, offers a number of activities and plenty of room for your pooch to play. Separate areas are available for large and small dogs to keep them safe and comfortable, and a bullpen area allows you to bring your down into the park without the concern of him escaping while off the lead.
Dogs don’t need to be confined to leads once inside the park, and play features like fire hydrants and others keep pets occupied. Unfortunately, ball throwing is off limits at this park, since it can encourage other dogs to fight for your pet’s toys. Don’t take in treats, either, since this can cause bullying between pets.
A water-well pump near the entrance can be used to obtain water for your pet, but prepare for the winter months by bringing your own. As you wait for your pet to wear himself out, you can relax on one of several benches and keep an eye on him.
