If you have a dog, you know how important they are in your everyday life and are basically another member of the family who has certain needs on a daily basis. So this should be taken into account when moving to a new city like San Jose, the third and less talked about city of the Bay Area metropolis. The ideal San Jose home for dog owners should be near a place where you walk your pooch on a regular basis and they can really play and stretch their legs—even if you have a yard they can run around in. Below are the five best dog parks in the San Jose area to help you really pinpoint the ideal new home for you, your family and, most importantly, your dog.

1. ROY M BUTCHER DOG PARK

A relatively small dog park, Roy M Butcher Dog Park is located in Cambrian Park, just north of the popular Silicon Valley neighborhood Los Gatos and the 85 freeway and just south of the area known as Campbell. Because of this it is an incredibly popular dog park with locals of all ages and ilks in San Jose, who bring their large and small dogs to the park with two sides, one meant for dogs over 40 pounds and one meant for dogs under 40 pounds. There is primarily fake grass and dirt in the dog area, so it is always very clean and easy for the city to clean. That said, your dog might want to run on real grass.

2. DEL MONTE PARK

Located in downtown San Jose just north of the 280 freeway, Del Monte Dog Park is one of the best in San Jose if for no other reason than the fact that it is very well kept. There is also fake grass at Del Monte which may be annoying for some dogs, but allows the city to keep it very clean on a regular basis as they can simply wash it without damaging it. There are also multiple parks, one for big dogs and one for small dogs and plenty of shade for dogs and owners alike. Despite being downtown, there is also ample street parking, making this dog park not only great for dogs but also convenient for owners who are showing up before or after work or on a lunch break.

3. SEVEN SEAS PARK

Located just north of the Sunnyvale neighborhood in the Northwest San Jose, Seven Seas Park is ideal for kids and dogs alike, as there is a very large play scape for kids to get lost in and also an excellent dog park for pups of all sizes to stretch out and run within. There is sand on the ground in the Seven Seas dog park as well, which most dogs really enjoy as a change of pace from hard surfaces in homes they may be used to, or dirt or grass. Many hours of the day the dog park will be relatively empty, but if you pick peak hours it can fill up with locals from around the area.

4. REED STREET DOG PARK

Located in Santa Clara beside the San Jose International Airport, Reed Street is about as clean and efficient as a dog park gets. They have poop bags, pooper scoopers, water bowls and even real grass, which is something of a luxury for most of the better dog parks in the San Jose area. The park is also divided between big and small areas for dogs of different sizes and is quite popular, as it’s the only real dog park in the whole community of Santa Clara. You can also watch planes take off and land from the nearby airport, which is something fun to watch as an owner while your dogs frolic around the park.

5. LOS GATOS COUNTY CREEK DOG PARK

An excellent dog park in the Silicon Valley community of Los Gatos is the Los Gatos Country Creek Dog Park on the Southwest corner of the San Jose metropolitan area. This nifty little park has two sides for big and small dogs and all the amenities one going to a dog park could ever want. The only real unfortunate thing about the County Creek dog park is the astroturf that has been put down for dogs instead of natural grass. While it makes sense in the drought, the natural turf can be incredibly hot in the summer and could burn a dog’s feet, if it is played on in the particularly hot summer months. There are also plenty of benches and drinking fountains for owners, as well as many spare balls laying around for dogs to play with or you to throw if you forgot one.
