Jacksonville boasts a lot of fantastic neighborhoods. If you are considering moving to the Jacksonville area, here are five neighborhoods to consider.

Riverside/Avondale

Riverside and Avondale are two neighborhoods that are often lumped together. Both neighborhoods are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There is a strong historic preservation bent in these neighborhoods, which means there is a great collection of architectural variety. These neighborhoods are located southeast of downtown right along the St. Johns River. There is easy access to downtown. There are three key commercial areas that serve these neighborhoods: Five Points, King Street District, and Shoppes of Avondale. There is a diversity of dining options in the neighborhood with Mossfire Grill, 13 Gypsies, and Orsay being three notable options.

Springfield

Located north of downtown, Springfield is an historic residential neighborhood. What was once the spot of the wealthiest residents of Jacksonville, the area experienced a period of decay and is now experiencing a lot of revitalization. Southern Living Magazine recognized Springfield as on a “best comeback neighborhood” citing the rehabilitation of older homes and reduction of crime. The neighborhood is still on the upswing and would be great for someone who wants to be part of a re-emerging neighborhood. There are a variety of restaurant options covering a range of cuisine including Caribbean and Mexican. There are also sweet little cafes and dessert shops which will be loved by those with a sweet tooth.

Eastside

Located east of downtown Jacksonville, this neighborhood is aptly named. Three significant complexes are located in this neighborhood: EverBank Field, the Veterans Memorial Arena and the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. If you love sports, you will be in the perfect spot in Eastside. Today, Eastside is experiencing a significant amount of urban renewal.

San Marco

The San Marco neighborhood is located south of downtown Jacksonville on the other side of the St. Johns River. Prior to annexation into Jacksonville it was known as the city of South Jacksonville. Several bridges provide easy access to downtown from San Marcos. The commercial core of this neighborhood is San Marco Square. The area experienced some decline in the 60’s and 70’s but is now experiencing significant investment and revitalization. There are many parks in the neighbor which are popular with kids and families. There are also neighborhood schools and a branch of the public library. Popular eateries in the neighborhood include Bistro Aix, Taverna and Maple Street Biscuit Company.

Ortega

If you have a lot of money to drop on a home and want to live in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Jacksonville, Ortega is your spot. This neighborhood is located on a peninsula and many residents are involved in boating or other activities that take advantage of the close location to the water. This community boasts waterfront parks and promenades and plenty of opportunities to enjoy park spaces. The commercial shopping area of Ortega Village retains its historic charm. You can even get an old-fashioned ice cream soda at the pharmacy.
