A word that rarely leaves St. Louis, Provel is a type of cheese that was invented in the area specifically for St. Louis pizza. It’s a mixture of cheddar, Swiss, and provolone, giving it a low melting point and the perfect amount of gooeyness.

Despite St. Louis’ size, it still has prevalent aspects of the small town Midwest atmosphere when it comes to the people that live there. It’s actually been called the most generous city in the country by several reputable publications over the years.

Falling plague to the side effects of being located in the Midwest flyover region, a lot of people you meet might not even know what state St. Louis is in. If you’re lucky and they know that, they’ll probably still have no clue where in Missouri the city is actually located. The easiest description is that it’s in the middle of the eastern border on the western bank of the Mississippi.

Rule #1 of food: Everything tastes better deep fried. Ravioli is no exception. A dish made popular in the streets of St. Louis, this deep fried variation of these puffy pasta pockets can now be found internationally.

St. Louis is famous for a dish called gooey butter cake and yes, it’s as delicious as it sounds. Technically it’s mostly flour with a ton of sugar and butter in it, hence the name. For a tasty variety of this dish, throw a little pumpkin in the mix.

Recently there have been talks that the Rams will be leaving St. Louis for Los Angeles and both parties seem to be seriously considering their options. Fortunately, St. Louis has been working on plans to build a new downtown stadium that will make the city attractive to another potential team if the worst happens for Rams fans sometime in the near future.

7. “What’s A Red Hot Riplet?”

The name might sound strange at first, but Red Hot Riplets are basically the official potato chip of St. Louis. A spicy chip that’s covered in hot chili pepper with a touch of sweetness, its flavor is typically described as “St. Louis Style Hot Sauce” and they’re probably one of the more addictive things on the planet.

“Into the blues” is a huge understatement. The people love in St. Louis love this style of music so much that the local hockey team is even named after the genre. With the city playing a huge role in the early development of the blues movement, people in St. Louis will always hold a special place for these tunes in their heart.

A rarity outside of St. Louis, pork steak is one dish the rest of the country is missing out on. The name is basically the most concise description possible, as it’s pork in steak form that’s usually barbecued and covered in that special St. Louis sauce.

If you’re noticing all the Budweiser signs hanging over bars and the empty bottles left in the street, it’s probably because America’s top brewery calls this city home. While other states now have breweries for this company as well, St. Louis will always be the true home of America’s favorite beer.

11. “Can You Actually Go Up In The Arch?”

It might seem sketchy as you load into a cramped elevator that sends you straight up to the top during a very slow ride with strangers, but it is possible to go up there. It’s definitely worth doing once, just to know what the experience is like and to catch some awesome city views.

Even some residents of this city don’t know how St. Louis got its name. It was founded in 1764 by Pierre Laclède, a French fur trader, who named the city St. Louis in honor of Louis IX of France.

Yes! The St. Louis rapper will always have fans in this city. If someone was ever a fan of his music, they’ll always have a hard time holding back their smile every time he comes out with a new song.

St. Louis Bread Co. is Panera, hence the uncanny similarities between their branding. With this franchise’s first location opening up in Kirkwoood, Mo., they changed the name when it went national but the vibe stayed the same.

Yes…obviously. There are no fans around the country more dedicated to their team than those of the St. Louis Cardinals. If it’s game day, expect the streets to be flooded with red.

The Billiken was created by an American art teacher named Florence Pretz in Kansas City, Mo. She claims to have seen the figure in a dream and it has since been adopted by Saint Louis University as the official mascot.

Rent is much lower in St. Louis than you might expect, especially compared to other big cities around the country. It’s even over 8 percent cheaper on average than the other huge city in this state, Kansas City.

A city that’s filled with notoriously bad drivers, St. Louis roads can seem like a death trap at times. Before you take the wheel here, make sure you’re comfortable with putting your life at risk.

Like any big city, St. Louis has its fair share of problems and the locals tend to be pretty vocal about them. Don’t mistake these feelings for a sense of disdain though, people from St. Louis will never stop loving the place they call home.
