Tourists love to talk about the cross town rivalry in the Twin Cities over which restaurant has the best Juicy Lucy burger. Let’s be honest…it’s a burger jam packed with a healthy portion of molten hot cheese, they’ll all be delicious.

2. Rude People

Home to the friendliest people in the entire country, you’ll rarely meet a mean person in the Gopher State. Expect all of your friends and family there to always have your back, no matter what.

3. Explaining Lutefisk To Tourists

A Norwegian dish that’s made from aged stockfish, this is one of the most interesting regional foods you’ll find in the country. If it’s your first time trying it, do your best not to think much about it before you take a bite.

4. Justifying Their Addiction To Ketchup

Walk into any restaurant and it’s easy to tell how much Minnesotans love ketchup. They’ll put it on anything and everything, even their steak. Don’t judge.

5. Keeping Their Jell-O And Fruit Separate

What’s one thing that could make fruit taste better? Covering it in flavored sugar goo before slamming it down your throat. After one bite, it’s easy to understand why Jell-O salad is a staple of any Minnesotan pot luck.

6. Really, Minnesotans Don’t Have Time To Eat Anything Separate

A dish famous in this region, Minnesotans love their hot dish. It’s basically a casserole that is baked and can include anything and everything, often featuring potatoes, beans, and loads of cheese.

7. Tourists Pointing Out Their Accents

With one of the most unique accents in the country, this is the first thing that any new person a Minnesotan meets that’s not from the Land of 10,000 Lakes will mention. It’s easy to notice, it’s all in the long vowels.

8. Packers Fans

If you take the opposite of how much love Minnesotans have for the Vikings, you’ll get the way they feel about the Green Bay Packers. A bitter rival that’s nearby, there are few things that a Vikings fan will despise more than people sporting the Packers’ G.

9. The Line At Starbucks

Why wait for Starbucks coffee when Caribou Coffee is right down the street? Minnesotans love this stuff to the point of slight addiction.

A soft Norwegian flatbread, this dish is typically made from potatoes, flour, butter, and milk that’s mixed together and cooked on a griddle. It sounds simple, but boy is it delicious.

Even if there’s several feet of snow on the ground, you’ll still see people walking around in shorts and T-shirts. Perhaps there’s just a tiny bit of extra toughness in every Minnesotan’s blood.

12. Clarifying That “Uff Da” Is A Real Word To Outsiders

An exclamation that originated in Norway, “uff da” gets dropped by Minnesotans constantly in normal conversation. It can be used to express surprise, exhaustion, relief, and dismay, most commonly being exchangeable with “wow.”

13. Trying To Hunt Down Booze On Sunday

When it comes to buying alcohol in Minnesota, things get a bit complicated. Not only do grocery stores only carry 3.2 percent beer with no wine and spirits, booze can’t be sold at all on Sunday. If a big Vikings game is coming up, make sure you’re well stocked before 10 p.m. on Saturdays because you won’t be running out for refills at halftime.

14. The Cold

Home to notoriously intense winters, Minnesotans pretend that they get used to the frigid temperatures, but at least once a year each and every one of them will secretly long to live somewhere that’s a bit more tolerable during the colder months of the year.

Once an awesome megastore complex, these days the only people that really go to the Mall of America are tourists in for a visit. Every local knows that there are cheaper prices for the same things right down the street.

16. Getting Mistaken For Canadians

Just because both places are cold and the people that reside in both Canada and Minnesota talk a little different than most English speakers doesn’t make the two places the same. Even so, a lot of the people a travelling Minnesotan encounters will probably assume they’re coming from the land of our neighbor to the north.

17. For The Vikings To Bring Back A Ring Before Showing Them Some Love

It’s no secret amongst NFL fans that the Minnesota Vikings have endured several rough years in a row. This doesn’t matter though, as the people in this state are some of the most diehard fans in the country when it comes to their local pro football team. Regardless of what their record looks like, you can always expect to see plenty of purple and gold flooding the streets on game day.

18. Mosquito Bites

With so much natural water around the state making for the perfect breeding grounds, at times it can seem like mosquitos might as well be Minnesota’s state bird. Minnesotans don’t make the mistake of forgetting bug spray twice.

19. Reminding Outsiders That The Timberwolves Still Exist

If you thought the Vikings have had a rough time in recent years, the Timberwolves seem to have slowly drifted into obscurity among out-of-state fans of professional basketball. Minnesotans can’t do much but hope that their return to greatness is on the way.

20. Waiting For The State Fair

The second largest state fair in the United States, the Minnesota State Fair has no problem attracting close to 2 million people every year. Filled with tons of fried food, plenty of rides, and some awesome people watching opportunities, this fair is a hard one to beat. Unfortunately it only happens once a year.

21. Brutal Slams

A side effect of being a state full of so many nice people, Minnesotans could never host a roast. The meanest thing they’ll ever say to someone is the subtle slam “that’s interesting?!” showing both their confusion and disagreement in a roundabout way.

22. Explaining Why Minnesota Is So Awesome To Outsiders

A view of the city.

Source: Flickr User m01229

Known to most Americans as that one cold state somewhere in the Midwest where they’ve never been, every Minnesota knows that their state is so much more than that. With tons of natural beauty, a great sense of community, and a mix of big cities and small towns, the Gopher State has something for everyone…as long as they can put up with some chilly weather for a few months of the year.
