As the 15 year anniversary of John F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife Carolyn Bessette’s deaths from a plane crash is upon us in the next few weeks, the dream home they coveted in Fairfield, Connecticut is being up for sale in an eerie twist of fate.
It’s a 10,000 square feet Newport Georgian style home at 1078 Sasco Road. Priced at 7.75 million dollars for the 4-acre property, Bella Vista as it is called, is one of just of a handful of homes from the 1920’s and 30’s Gilded Era of America– when manses were really mansions and currency was real money–much of it derived from gold and oil. Spectacular sunset views all over Long Island and ultra privacy had Barbra Streisand close to putting a bid on it, though it wasn’t for sale a few years ago.
The real celebrity story though, belongs to JFK Jr. Having heard from his mom, Jackie Kennedy about her summer stopovers there on her way to Hammersmith Farm in Rhode Island–known as the Summer White House (which was also owned by her stepfather Hugh D. Auchincloss Jr.,) John Jr., became obsessed with the property. He was taken with the old world majesty and quiet life it might provide him after a life of constant colliding with the world’s media. When he was in the neighborhood, he and Carolyn would drive around the property and nose around about the possibility of it hitting the market.
His co-founder of George Magazine–Bradley A. Jack also resided in a mega-multi-million dollar home on Sasco Road. Since Carolyn was from Connecticut, it made the prospect of buying the 8 bedroom, 6 bath home home an even more exciting proposition– for it boasts not only grandness, but several small warm, cozy pockets to lounge in and plenty of outdoor areas to play any number of sports, including a tennis court and a striking pool. A golf course and country club nearby would be perfect when the urge to socialize struck.
While its only an hour and a half out of New York City, it still requires just enough of a tricky commute to discourage commercial spoiling from those Wall Street guys– who might take over the neighborhood, so as to invite the more genteele work from home types and creative entrepreneurs.
Harold Gray, the American cartoonist, best known as the creator of the newspaper comic strip Little Orphan Annie called this Bella Vista estate home.
Streisand is said to have circled her limo around and around in pursuit of a home either there or nearby, for just that very reason, but it may have only been destined as the perfect love shack for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt and their brood. Time will tell.
Listing agent is Michelle Genovesi of michelleandcompany.com
