1. The House Of Many Colors
The home of artist Randy Gilson, Randyland is a true explosion of color on an otherwise average Pittsburgh street.
A brightly painted house covered in neon colors, the walls here are decorated with dinosaurs, butterflies, and much, much more. Typically open from 1 to 7 in the afternoon, admission is free but donations are accepted.
2. A Town Full Of Ghosts
Once a booming mine town, many sources put the number of residents that live in Centralia in the single digits today. After a giant underground mine shaft fire in 1962 resulted in rapid flight from this city, it quickly fell apart giving it quite the eerie appeal.
Even after more than 50 years, the fire burns strong. It’s expected to do so for another 250.
3. There’s A Building Full Of Creepy Crawlers
If you’re a fan of snakes and lizards, then Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland in Allenwood is the place for you. With tons of weird and exotic reptiles, this place can’t be missed.
4. The Devil Might Find This Place Cozy
A spot that earned the nickname of Devil’s Den during the Civil War thanks to a confusing rock maze and a high death toll, this area of the Gettysburg battlefield is sure to send chills down your spine.
After hearing the stories of what happened here and seeing several bloody pictures, it will be easy to understand why this spot also went by the nickname of the Slaughter Pen.
5. Adults In Animal Costumes
Who knew Pittsburgh was home to the world’s largest furry convention? Attracting several thousand costume wearing adults, Anthrocon is certainly a sight to be seen.
6. The Birthplace Of Solitary Confinement
Some people have heard of the Eastern State Penitentiary thanks to the famous people it’s housed like Al Capone, but did you know that this was also the first American prison to punish people via the means of solitary confinement? Now out-of-use for over 40 years, walking the halls of this famous building will have your spook-o-meter going wild.
7. A Shrine To An Expert Escaper
Located in Scranton, the Houdini Museum honors none other than Harry Houdini himself. Not only do you get to see all of the tools and outfits he used, there are also several active magicians there that put on quite the show.
8. A Place Where Gravity Doesn’t Exist
The first time you visit Bedford’s Gravity Hill, your jaw is sure to drop. For some reason (I won’t ruin it for you), everything rolls uphill on this specific strip of road, whether it’s a car, liquid, or a ball.
9. Thousands Of Elephants
If you’re a big fan of Dumbo and his friends, Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum in Orrtanna is the place for you. Home to over 12,000 elephant themed items, you could get lost in the shelves here for hours.
Fortunately, if you get too hungry they oddly also have some of the most delicious fudge you’ll ever have the pleasure of enjoying.
10. Hope You’re Not Scared Of Heights
Overlooking Pittsburgh, people from the Steel City might know the Duquesne Incline, but it tends to get ignored by people in the rest of the state.
An inclined plane railroad, a ride in this train car only takes 800 feet of distance to climb 400 feet up the side of Mt. Washington. In other words, it’s pretty darn steep.
11. More Boots Than You Can Imagine
One of the only stores that’s in Corsica, Jack’s Boot Shop is worth going to even if you’re not looking for new footwear. With thousands of boots in stock, this place is definitely a sight to be seen.
12. The “Most Unusual Tourist Trap In The World”
Known for housing bizarre items stranger than even the wildest imagination can conjure up, a trip to the Trundle Manor is something you won’t soon forget.
With things like stuffed creatures, slimy things in jars, and crazy torture devices stocking the walls here, their collection of items is disturbingly awesome.
13. The Town Of Big Beaver
Smack dab in Beaver County and home to around 2,000 residents, Big Beaver is one town that’s worth visiting for the name alone. Don’t miss taking a picture with a town sign as you’re passing through.
14. The World’s Largest Burgers
If you’re looking for a sandwich that’s twice the size of your head, Denny’s Barrel Pub has got exactly what you’re searching for.
Not only do they offer a 15lb 2-person burger challenge, they once broke a world record by successfully constructing a burger that weighed 123 pounds, nearly 500 quarter pounders at McDonalds.
15. A UFO Crash Site
In 1965, residents of Kecksburg were shocked when an unidentified object that looked like a giant acorn came crashing down from the sky. Unfortunately, witnesses claim the scene was quickly taken over by the government before they could get a good view.
After 50 years, the town still hosts the Kecksburg UFO Festival commemorating that night, making this the perfect place in Pennsylvania to go hunting for some aliens.
16. The World’s Largest Big Mac
The big sandwiches don’t stop at Denny’s. Pennsylvania is also home to a Big Mac museum and restaurant which houses a 14 foot tall replica of the sandwich. Head to North Huntingdon to snap the most American selfie you’ll probably ever take.
17. Ruins Of The “8th Wonder Of The World”
Once standing at 301 feet tall and stretching for over 2,000 feet, the Kinzua Bridge was quite the engineering feat. Unfortunately a large portion of it collapsed in 2003.
However, today there’s still a pretty awesome skywalk in its place with a glass-floored observation deck providing excellent views of the wreckage in the valley below.
18. A Castle Worthy Of A Fairy Tale
Built between 1908 and 1912 with over 44 rooms, 18 fireplaces, and 10 bathrooms, the Fonthill Castle is one of the most unique homes in this state. Today, it also houses over 40,000 historical relics, making this place definitely worth the day-trip.
19. The Twin Bridges
Crossing Huntington Creek, this covered bridge is the only one of its type still standing in the country. Stretching 75 feet long, it’s made up of two different segments. If you’re into bridges, head straight to Chambersburg to check this one out.
20. The Holiest Of Brews
A renovated church might seem like an odd place for a brewery, but that’s exactly what the people at Church Brew Works made happen.
With an enormous open space inside that’s complete with plenty of stained glass in every direction, you’ll definitely want to come here for a pint next time you’re in Pittsburgh.
21. A World Class Drive
Delivering some of the most beautiful views in the state, it’s hard to keep your eyes on the road while you’re driving the High Plateau scenic byway, a stretch of Route 144 between Snow Shoe and Renovo.
From this road, you get a great panoramic of Sproul State Forest and all of the awesome wildlife that lives there.
22. Jim Thorpe Town
Formally Mauch Chunk (meaning Bear Mountain), the famous athlete Jim Thorpe was buried here with the condition that the town be named after him.
He’s well known for his versatility as an athlete, competing in the Olympics, baseball, football, and basketball at a highly competitive level.
23. A 9 Foot Colon?!
If you haven’t seen the 9-foot colon in Philly then your life just isn’t complete. Along with this colon, the Mütter Museum of Medical Oddities is full of other strange and peculiar body parts, like deformed skulls and preserved bodies.
24. A House That Looks Like A Shoe
At 25 feet tall and 48 feet long, the Haines Shoe House was built when the original owner requested an architect make a house that looked like his favorite shoe. Mission accomplished! You can see it on Shoe House Road in York, Penn.
25. A $100,000 Crayola Crayon
A favorite amongst youngsters, the Crayola Experience in Easton gives visitors a first-class ticket into the world of coloring. Two popular exhibits include a 1,500 pound crayon and one that was sold for $100,000, which also happened to be the hundred billionth Crayola ever made.
26. The Ultimate Thrill Ride
Used to train astronauts by spinning at 175 miles per hour, the Johnsville Human Centrifuge isn’t for your typical theme park goer.
Capable of producing enough G-force to kill someone, a certain brave soul sat in the chair for 24 straight hours in attempt to prove a mission to Mars was possible.
